Book excerpt: This book derived mainly from historical research, reading and rational analysis of the books of the Old Testament, the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and the epistles, without clerical or religious lenses. A possible connection with the apocryphal gospels or antique manuscripts will be mere coincidence. The fictional part of the book is on account of the artistic license. The reader will reduce or enlarge the fictional field according to his/her beliefs, intelligence, and sensitivity. In the Bible itself, the margin for fiction and contradiction is significant. The storyline adopts a linear path of the life the great master of humanity. It brings up the circumstances and the human sensuality of the conception and birth of Joshua and of John Baptist, aspects of their adolescence and maturity, the novitiate and the gradual ascension to the classes of adepts, prophets and illuminati in the school of mysteries called Egyptian Cross Fraternity. This part of the book contains debates about the fundamental aspects of the material world and spiritual world. Following, the book shows the scheme of the moral and religious revolution incited by the school of mysteries and led externally by John Baptist and Joshua, the first in the role of messenger, and the second in the role of messiah. It describes the spiritual ecstasy of Joshua in the eve of the crucifixion, the decisive moments of resurrection, the organization of the primitive church, the role of Maria Magdalene, the marriage and the descendants of Joshua, the election for the function of Hierophant, and his last days in Gallia. There are interludes, like the domestic and social life, the first sexual experience of Joshua, the romantic love affair with Maria Magdalene, the issues of adultery and homosexuality, episodes of crime, suicide, sodomy, rebellion, investigations, and trials. These topics account for the realism and verisimilitude of the story. The indelible presence of the school of mysteries pervades all the way through the work.

While we would like to think that incoming freshmen would be pondering their studies, in reality, educational content is often a sideline issue. The real concern on the minds of most is which fraternity or sorority to "pledge." To those who have attended major universities, the word fraternity brings up images of wild parties, drunkenness beyond reason, and sexual perversion to the lowest of levels. Where did these organizations come from, and what is their purpose? What does the Bible-believing Christian need to know about the matter?

This book is extremely intense and sections are extremely raw.” “Growing up, I always thought that the church, the Southern Black Church, was supposed to be the safest place on earth. Well, what a wake-up call.” Revenge, an airborne virus, can travel with a ravaging force that causes catastrophic damage. It can cause overwhelming, irreversible destruction to the life, lifestyle, and well-being of an individual or to a large group. Dexter B. Cavanaugh III, a well-dressed pit bull in a three-piece designer suit disguised as a successful legal gladiator, has a severe case of this disease, and he doesn’t want to be cured. On the contrary, the potency of his internal condition continues to grow day by day as it feeds on his relentless focus to seek justice. He is on a mission to get revenge for the death of his best friend, Patrick—a mission that is also fueled by a cultural plague that has been perpetuated in the Black Church for decades. His death would not be in vain. Dexter is complicated. The anal-retentive, overachieving, perfectionist as well as four of his close comrades have no shame in admitting that they definitely have their share of issues as a result of their provocative and tumultuous pasts. In his journey of seeking redemption, he confirms that sometimes you have to make someone go through hell and risk losing everything to get it. No one attacks a member of The Silent Fraternity without repercussions, even if he is hiding behind the sacred cloth. Hell hath no fiery like hurricane Dexter. This was personal, very personal. The Silent Fraternity, a moving account of a controversial yet unspoken social issue that has been brewing for decades. This book burns through a wide range of emotions.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many Americans, modern marches by the Ku Klux Klan may seem like a throwback to the past or posturing by bigoted hatemongers. To Kelly Baker, they are a reminder of how deeply the Klan is rooted in American mainstream Protestant culture. Most studies of the KKK dismiss it as an organization of racists attempting to intimidate minorities and argue that the Klan used religion only as a rhetorical device. Baker contends instead that the KKK based its justifications for hatred on a particular brand of Protestantism that resonated with mainstream Americans, one that employed burning crosses and robes to explicitly exclude Jews and Catholics. To show how the Klan used religion to further its agenda of hate while appealing to everyday Americans, Kelly Baker takes readers back to its "second incarnation" in the 1920s. During that decade, the revived Klan hired a public relations firm that suggested it could reach a wider audience by presenting itself as a "fraternal Protestant organization that championed white supremacy as opposed to marauders of the night." That campaign was so successful that the Klan established chapters in all forty-eight states. Baker has scoured official newspapers and magazines issued by the Klan during that era to reveal the inner workings of the order and show how its leadership manipulated religion, nationalism, gender, and race. Through these publications we see a Klan trying to adapt its hate-based positions with the changing times in order to expand its base by reaching beyond a narrowly defined white male Protestant America. This engrossing expos looks closely at the Klan's definition of Protestantism, its belief in a strong relationship between church and state, its notions of masculinity and femininity, and its views on Jews and African Americans. The book also examines in detail the Klan's infamous 1924 anti-Catholic riot at Notre Dame University and draws alarming parallels between the Klan's message of the 1920s and current posturing by some Tea Party members and their sympathizers. Analyzing the complex religious arguments the Klan crafted to gain acceptability-and credibility-among angry Americans, Baker reveals that the Klan was more successful at crafting this message than has been credited by historians. To tell American history from this startling perspective demonstrates that some citizens still participate in intolerant behavior to protect a fabled white Protestant nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, the International Congress on World Evangelization met in Lausanne, Switzerland. Gathering together nearly 2,500 Protestant evangelical leaders from more than 150 countries and 135 denominations, it rivaled Vatican II in terms of its influence. But as David C. Kirkpatrick argues in A Gospel for the Poor, the Lausanne Congress was most influential because, for the first time, theologians from the Global South gained a place at the table of the world's evangelical leadership—bringing their nascent brand of social Christianity with them. Leading up to this momentous occasion, after World War II, there emerged in various parts of the world an embryonic yet discernible progressive coalition of thinkers who were embedded in global evangelical organizations and educational institutions such as the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, and the International Fellowship of Evangelical Mission Theologians. Within these groups, Latin Americans had an especially strong voice, for they had honed their theology as a religious minority, having defined it against two perceived ideological excesses: Marxist-inflected Catholic liberation theology and the conservative political loyalties of the U.S. Religious Right. In this context, transnational conversations provoked the rise of progressive evangelical politics, the explosion of Christian mission and relief organizations, and the infusion of social justice into the very mission of evangelicals around the world and across a broad spectrum of denominations. Drawing upon bilingual interviews and archives and personal papers from three continents, Kirkpatrick adopts a transnational perspective to tell the story of how a Cold War generation of progressive Latin Americans, including seminal figures such as Ecuadorian René Padilla and Peruvian Samuel Escobar, developed, named, and exported their version of social Christianity to an evolving coalition of global evangelicals.

In this collection of essays, gifted writers in their twenties and early thirties reflect on their college years by telling stories—some hilarious, some heart-wrenching—on the intersection of faith and college. At a time when so much is written about young adults but not by young adults, this collection allows writers to reveal their college experience in their own voice, sharing, through reflection on their own joys and sorrows, unique insight into students’ experience of college. Themes include negotiating identity, sex and sexuality, discerning the future, studying abroad, and transitions in faith. This collection includes stories from large public universities and small, faith-related colleges. Perfect for faith leaders, college administrators, study groups, young adults, and anyone who loves a college student, Kissing in the Chapel, Praying in the Frat House reveals college struggles that help us reflect on faith and life in college, and forever.
