This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pre-reserve era, Aboriginal bands in the northern plains were relatively small multicultural communities that actively maintained fluid and inclusive membership through traditional kinship practices. These practices were governed by the Law of the People as described in the traditional stories of Wîsashkêcâhk, or Elder Brother, that outlined social interaction, marriage, adoption, and kinship roles and responsibilities. In Elder Brother and the Law of the People, Robert Innes offers a detailed analysis of the role of Elder Brother stories in historical and contemporary kinship practices in Cowessess First Nation, located in southeastern Saskatchewan. He reveals how these tradition-inspired practices act to undermine legal and scholarly definitions of “Indian” and counter the perception that First Nations people have internalized such classifications. He presents Cowessess’s successful negotiation of the 1996 Treaty Land Agreement and their high inclusion rate of new “Bill-C31s” as evidence of the persistence of historical kinship values and their continuing role as the central unifying factor for band membership.Elder Brother and the Law of the People presents an entirely new way of viewing Aboriginal cultural identity on the northern plains.

Book excerpt: Dr. Bob Thompson and three friends from Michigan travel to Moose Bay Lodge on Reindeer Lake in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, to fish for big northern pike and lake trout, having no idea they’re about to get caught up in a murder mystery. The friends are assigned a First Nations Cree Indian fishing guide, Oliver Bear, who Thompson knows from previous trips to the lodge. Oliver leads them to the big fish. Oliver has also discovered the location of a valuable secret on the lake – and he is cruelly tortured and murdered in a Sun Dance ceremony to reveal that secret. The First Nations warrior says nothing, forcing whoever killed him to find some other means to find what they seek. Knowing that Thompson has assisted law enforcement agencies to solve and prosecute murder cases in Connecticut and Michigan, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ask him to assist in the case. Working with Canadian authorities, Thompson makes it his mission to find out what happened to Oliver and bring his killer – or killers – to justice.

Download or read book Canadian Society in the Twenty-First Century, Fourth Edition written by Trevor W. Harrison and published by Canadian Scholars. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confederation may have established Canada’s nationhood in 1867, but the relationships framing Canada’s modern existence go back much further. Employing a unique socio-historical perspective, Canadian Society in the Twenty-First Century examines three formative relationships that have shaped the country: Canada and Quebec, Canada and the United States, and Canada and Indigenous nations. Now in its fourth edition, this engaging text offers students an overview of Canadian society through a series of connections rather than a collection of statistics. Trevor W. Harrison and John W. Friesen weave together complex aspects of the nation’s economic, political, and socio-cultural development. They guide readers to use this interdisciplinary framework to consider some of the tough questions that Canada is likely to face in adjusting to demands and challenges in the next few decades. Reflecting the most current scholarship in the field, this revised edition features new discussions on issues such as the current crisis of neo-liberal globalization, Canada’s petroleum industry, global warming, the Wet’suwet’en dispute in 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Exploring the unique character of Canada today, this text is a vibrant resource for sociology courses on Canadian society as well as courses in Canadian studies and Canadian history.

Book Synopsis Aboriginal Consultation, Environmental Assessment, and Regulatory Review in Canada by : Kirk N. Lambrecht
Download or read book Aboriginal Consultation, Environmental Assessment, and Regulatory Review in Canada written by Kirk N. Lambrecht and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supreme Court of Canada decisions have defined a general framework for the "duty to consult" Aboriginal peoples and accommodate their concerns over natural resource development, but anticipate the details of that framework will be expanded upon in the future. Aboriginal Consultation, Environmental Assessment, and Regulatory Review in Canada offers a paradigm that advances that discussion. It proposes an integrated and robust planning model for natural resource extraction allowing Aboriginal peoples, industry, governments, tribunals, and the Courts to all make contributions to reconciliation in the context of sustainable development and environmental protection. Kirk Lambrecht surveys the law of actual and asserted Aboriginal rights and historical and modern Treaty rights in Canada and discusses the national and international purposes of environmental assessment and regulatory review. He appraises the fundamental principles of Supreme Court of Canada jurisprudence defining aboriginal consultation and accommodation as a constitutional imperative and uses case studies involving the National Energy Board to demonstrate how integrated process has evolved over time. Finally he offers general conclusions on the practical utility, and outstanding challenges, involving an integrated planning paradigm.
