Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Cigar Box Guitar Chord Book is the most extensive library of chords ever assembled for the 4-string cigar box guitar. Incredibly, there are thousands of possible chords with only four strings in GDGB tuning. This extensive chord library will give you the tools to cover all genres of music and perform all styles of music. I have included as many chords possible in each of the 12 keys in music. There are multiple voicings for each chord group providing many chord choices. You will find chords categorized by note names starting from A - Ab/G#. Each note name has the most used chord suffixes, i.e., Major, Major 6, Major 7, etc. For beginners, there is a convenient summary of easier chords and common chord shapes. Chord Progressions Learning your favourite chords is the first step, followed by learning to switch between chords to play songs and chord progressions. Improve your chords by playing through the chord progressions taken directly from popular songs. There is a good selection of blues chord progressions that cover the standard blues changes in all keys. Have a look at the popular strumming and fingerpicking patterns to further your chord playing abilities. There is also a review on basic chord theory explaining how chords are formed, the chord numbering system, chord formulas, and understanding chord progressions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tired of fighting with your fellow band members because you don't understand each other's instruments? Music Theory: the Language of Sound demystifies guitar and bass in a straightforward, easy to read manner. Writer KarrArikh Tor explains: "Music theory is a common musical language for Western music traditions that musicians use to communicate musical ideas between instruments. In most cases, music theory is written from the piano, because it is easier to see chords and understand which notes are sharp or flat. Unfortunately, a guitarist or bassist can do little with this information, because they have no black and white keys and do not see chords in the same manner." The graphics in Music Theory: the Language of Sound tie the fretboards of the guitar and bass guitar to the keyboard and staves, making it a valuable tool not just for guitarists and bassists but for every member in a band. Learn how to easily find 'boxes' on the fretboard and play leads like a professional. Find out how to take your musical ideas and write it them onto paper so anyone can play along. See the patterns on the fretboards and learn the positions to play scales in any Key. Head out to the associated video channel and hear variations played while you read along with the sheet music. Chapter One explains the basic theory behind Western Musical Traditions, treating music theory like a language [Introduced in this chapter are: Octave divisions, Whole steps, Halfsteps, Accidentals, Clefs, Grand staff, Treble staff, Bass staff, Alto staff, Tenor staff, Time signature, Note types, Rests, Tempo]. Chapter Two shows where the natural notes on a piano are located on the guitar and bass guitar fretboards and on the Grand Staff [Introduced in this chapter are: Standard tuning, Tablature]. Chapter Three examines scales, particularly the Major Key scale, showing how we develop our scales from a tonic note, and where to find Major scales on the fretboards of guitars and bass guitars [Introduced in this chapter are: Ascending scale, Descending scale, Chromatic scale, Tonic note, Tonic scale names, Diatonic scales, Enharmonic Notes and Keys, Scale degrees, 15 Major Keys, Intervals]. Chapter Four defines chords, showing all the chords that can be built from a root note [Introduced in this chapter are: Chords, Note stacks, Triad chords (including Major, minor, diminished and augmented chords), Chord Qualities, Chord Inversions, Seventh chords (including Dominant, Major, minor-Major, minor, augmented, diminished, and half-diminished seventh chords), Suspended chords, Added note chords, Extended chords (including Ninth, Eleventh, and Thirteenth chords)]. Chapter Five continues from chapter four, defining and building chords naturally found in a Major Key scale [Introduced in this chapter are: Chords built from scale degrees (including all Major, minor, diminished, suspended, added note, and extended chords occurring naturally in a Major Key), Bar Chords for both guitar and bass guitar, Power Chords, how to use bar chords]. Chapter Six examines how to use the 15 Key Signatures and how modes are built from the Major Key scale [Included in this chapter are: 15 Major Keys, Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths, Circle of Fourths, Modes, Ionian mode, Dorian mode, Phrygian mode, Lydian mode, Mixolydian mode, Aeolian mode, Locrian mode, Natural minor Key, Harmonic minor Key, Melodic minor Key]. Chapter Seven examines additional notations that can be used on staves or in tablature [Introduced in this chapter are: Dynamic symbols (including Forte, Piano, Crescendo, Diminuendo, Fermata, Marcato, Sforzato, Tenuto, Portato, and Staccato), Octave shifts (using 8va, 8vb, 15ma, 15mb, 22ma, 22mb), Grace notes (Acciaccatura, and Appoggiatura), Tied notes, Slurs, Repeat measure symbol, Barlines, Brackets, Braces, Prima Volta, Seconda Volta, D.C. (Da Capo), D.S. (Dal Segno), Fine, Coda, Segno]. Chapter Eight examines adding chord arrangements to a melody, transposing songs, and working wit

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word sensei in Japanese literally means “one who came before,” but that’s not what Janet Pocorobba’s teacher wanted to be called. She used her first name, Western-style. She wore a velour Beatles cap and leather jacket, and she taught foreigners, in English, the three-stringed shamisen, an instrument that fell out of tune as soon as you started to play it. Vexed by the music and Sensei’s mission to upend an elite musical system, Pocorobba, on the cusp of thirty, gives up her return ticket home to become a lifelong student of her teacher. She is eventually featured in Japan Cosmo as one of the most accomplished gaijin, “outside people,” to play the instrument. Part memoir, part biography of her Sensei, The Fourth String looks back on the initial few years of that apprenticeship, one that Janet’s own female English students advised her was “wife training,” steeped in obedience, loyalty, and duty. Even with her maverick teacher, Janet is challenged by group hierarchies, obscure traditions, and the tricky spaces of silence in Japanese life. Anmoku ryokai, Sensei says to explain: “We have to understand without saying.” By the time Janet finds out this life might not be for her, she is more at home in the music than the Japanese will allow. For anyone who has had a special teacher, or has lost themselves in another world, Janet Pocorobba asks questions about culture, learning, tradition, and self. As Gish Jen has said of The Fourth String, “What does it mean to be taught? To be transformed?”

Book excerpt: Since the publication of Solomon Volkov's disputed memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich, the composer and his music has been subject to heated debate concerning how the musical meaning of his works can be understood in relationship to the composer's life within the Soviet State. While much ink has been spilled, very little work has attempted to define how Shostakovich's music has remained so arresting not only to those within the Soviet culture, but also to Western audiences - even though such audiences are often largely ignorant of the compositional context or even the biography of the composer. This book offers a useful corrective: setting aside biographically grounded and traditional analytical modes of explication, Reichardt uncovers and explores the musical ambiguities of four of the composer‘s middle string quartets, especially those ambiguities located in moments of rupture within the musical structure. The music is constantly collapsing, reversing, inverting and denying its own structural imperatives. Reichardt argues that such confrontation of the musical language with itself, though perhaps interpretable as Shostakovich's own unique version of double-speak, also poignantly articulates the fractured state of a more general form of modern subjectivity. Reichardt employs the framework of Lacanian psychoanalysis to offer a cogent explanation of this connection between disruptive musical process and modern subjectivity. The ruptures of Shostakovich's music become symptoms of the pathologies at the core of modern subjectivity. These symptoms, in turn, relate to the Lacanian concept of the real, which is the empty kernel around which the modern subject constructs reality. This framework proves invaluable in developing a powerful, original hermeneutic understanding of the music. Read through the lens of the real, the riddles written into the quartets reveal the arbitrary and contingent state of the musical subject's constructed reality, reflecting pathologies ende

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long a symbol of American culture, the banjo actually originated in Africa before European-Americans adopted it. Karen Linn shows how the banjo--despite design innovations and several modernizing agendas--has failed to escape its image as a "half-barbaric" instrument symbolic of antimodernism and sentimentalism. Caught in the morass of American racial attitudes and often used to express ambivalence toward modern industrial society, the banjo stood in opposition to the "official" values of rationalism, modernism, and belief in the beneficence of material progress. Linn uses popular literature, visual arts, advertisements, film, performance practices, instrument construction and decoration, and song lyrics to illustrate how notions about the banjo have changed. Linn also traces the instrument from its African origins through the 1980s, alternating between themes of urban modernization and rural nostalgia. She examines the banjo fad of bourgeois Northerners during the late nineteenth century; the African-American banjo tradition and the commercially popular cultural image of the southern black banjo player; the banjo's use in ragtime and early jazz; and the image of the white Southerner and mountaineer as banjo player.

The bright percussive chord strums and flashy tremolo picking glissandos help define the genre. In the 1920s, when Dixieland jazz was at its zenith, the four-string banjo was the fretted instrument of choice because it could easily be heard above the simultaneous improv of the band's clarinet, cornet, saxophone, and trombone frontline. (Electric guitars were not invented until a decade later.) The chord voicings in these expertly crafted arrangements were selected so that the melody notes were always within reach to enable the user to play chord/melody style if desired. The lead sheets consist of lyrics and two sets of chord diagrams tenor and plectrum positioned throughout the arrangements. This collection of 45 songs includes: Ain't Misbehavin' * Alexander's Ragtime Band * Basin Street Blues * Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home * Honeysuckle Rose * I Got Rhythm * Lazy River * St. Louis Blues * Sweet Georgia Brown * 'Way down Yonder in New Orleans * and more.

Book excerpt: Parker (musicology and string performance, Widener College) looks at a wide range of string quartets by composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Pleyel, Distler, and Filtz, discussing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Following chapters on the string quartet as chamber music and its private and public social aspects, she defines the four types of musical discourse as the lecture, the polite conversation, the debate, and the conversation, showing how each work is the result of the composer's stylistic choices, location, and intended performers and audience.
