Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader of the Popular Series With reference to the few "Oral Exercises" found at the bottoms of pages in this and the preceding numbers, we would say, that they are not designed, in the least, to teach grammar; but to lead pupils in a natural, easy and philosophical way, and of their own efforts, to comprehend the meaning of what they read, and to explain it to others, void of technicalities. The Writing Exercises have a still higher object. They are a novel, and, as we believe, truly philosophical method of daily drill in the construction of sentences. As here planned they are exercises that will not be found at all difficult for those who go through them systematically, from the beginning of the book, while, at the same time, they will require some thought, on the part of pupils, to change the phraseology as required, - and more and more of it as the pupil advances; while in the latter part of this Fourth Reader he will find that he may exercise his judgment still further in selecting the best among several possible forms of expression. - [See the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Series of Exercises, pp. 200, 225, and 289.] It may be asked, "Why encumber a Reading Book with Exercises of this character, - and why not devote a separate work to them instead?" We answer, "Because they are very appropriately connected with lessons in reading, and really form part of them; - because they are much cheaper in this form than in any other; - and, what is most important, because they will be used extensively in this form, and without the necessity of separate classes in the school, and separate books." They are, moreover, to some extent, brief analyses of the Chapters; and hence, in addition to their main object, they serve as a kind of daily review of the reading lessons. Having long been convinced, both from our experience as a teacher and from the well-known views of prominent educators, that children are seldom provided with sufficient school-reading in their Reading Books, we have made most of the numbers of the present series somewhat larger than is usual. We have aimed, thereby, to make the gradation, from the beginning, very easy, and still to attain as high a standard in the selections of the Fifth, and the Supplementary number, as the needs of pupils require. There is little danger that the amount of interesting and useful school-reading will be too abundant. Parents can provide their children with no better, safer, or cheaper reading - considering quality and adaptability - than is generally found in their Reading Books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fourth Reader While doubtless much good has come from reading the brief selec tions from standard authors found in the ordinary readers, they have failed of the prime purpose of inculcating a fondness for literature in its completeness and a taste for reading good books. It is not improbable that the too prevalent taste for scrappy reading is partially derived from the character of the reading books upon which children have been fed. Hence as many selections as possible in these Readers are given in full, and it is urged that teachers treat them as complete works of literature and see that they are studied as such. In the Fourth Reader the child is given his first distinct introduction to mythology. In the earlier books, fables and fairy stories have been used, and there has been a little suggestion of mythology; but in the Fourth, myth and wonder - those subjects which appeal to the child's imagination and carry him out of his limited environment into a larger world are emphasized. We believe that this is in accord with what ever truth exists in the culture epoch theory of education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader of the School and Family Series Teachers will observe that, while we have aimed to make the several di visions, or Parts, in this Reader as instructive as possible, we have not lost sight of the importance of making them interesting also; and to this end we have introduced great variety in matter and manner, and illustra tions which are valuable lessons in themselves. For the sake of that regular gradation which is highly essential in School Readers, and to avoid introducing too much on any one subject in the same book, we have made two divisions each of Human Physiology, Botany, and Natural Philosophy, and have given only the first and easier portion Of each subject in the present Reader. The second divisions will be contained in the Fifth Reader. Zoology is here continued in the division entitled Ornithology, or Birds. For the beautiful illustrations in this part we are indebted to the same art ist (parsons) to whom we expressed our obligations for the admirable draw ings Of animals in the Third Reader. In Part IV., Miscellaneous, we have given a few old standard pieces, because they are unsurpassed in merit, will be new to every succeeding generation, and have no superiors as reading exercises. Part VI, entitled Sketches from Sacred History, partially develops the plan which will be pursued in the Historical divisions of the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Readers. I am indebted for valuable aid in the departments of Botany and Natu ral Philosophy to Professor N. B. Webster, of Virginia, by whom portions Of those divisions and some original and very happy illustrations of philo sophical principles were furnished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reader: For the Fourth Grade In the Fourth Reader 'of this series, children are introduced to the great realm of real literature. In the earlier books the foundations for this advance were carefully laid. One at a time, each phase of child development has been recognized and emphasized. The varied activities, games and pets; nature, fairy tales, and adventure; fable, primitive fiction, and rhyme - all these in rien abundance have helped to furnish a vocabulary and a margin of intellectual and moral resources. In the earlier Readers the authors have also aimed to secure a mastery of phonic elements, and an ability to recognize words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Century Fourth Reader: Selected and Adapted From the World's Standard Literature In placing this book in the hands of pupil and teacher, it will not be amiss to offer a few suggestions on the art of reading. Few understand this simple art; yet to have mastered it means that we are to get, through life, twice, often thrice and four times, as much from what we read. With the Fourth Reader we begin to study something more than the pronunciation of words. From this point on, reading should be a training in the gathering up of thought from the words or symbols with which we have already become more or less familiar. It is a matter of surprise how much thought a printed page con tains. The greater the writer, the more there is in a page of his writing. To extract all that the classic author has stored away for us is by no means easy. The truth is, we must re-create his thought, his dreams, his noble conceptions, after him; in short, we have to share in his genius and his skill. In our case, fortunately, he is our guide, and leads us if we are only willing to be led. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For more than half the year they held the world in their grasp. They locked up the streams in their rocky beds, hushing their music and the music of the birds as well. They left nothing but a wild waste under the cold Sky. They hated the warm sunshine which stirs the wild flowers out of their Sleep, and covers the mountains with verdure, and sets all the birds a-singing in the tree-tops. Above all, they hated Thor, whose flashing hammer drove them back into J O'-tun-heim and guarded the summer Sky. So long as Thor had his hammer Asgard was safe against the giants. It is not necessarily abstruse, difficult, or remote from common life. It is a piece of literature that has received the approval of good judges for a long enough time to make that approval settled. Like good music, it cannot grow old; it is last year's rag-time that becomes unpleasant, not the good old songs. A classic may be as old as Homer, or as new as Hawthorne; it may be as difficult as Dante, or as simple as Mother Goose.
