Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Dimension I have endeavoured to present the subject of the higher dimensionality of space in a clear manner, devoid of mathematical subtleties and technicalities. In order to engage the interest of the reader, I have in the earlier chapters dwelt on the perspective the hypothesis of a fourth dimension opens, and have treated of the many connections there are between this hypothesis and the ordinary topics of our thoughts. A lack of mathematical knowledge will prove of no disadvantage to the reader, for I have used 110 mathematical processes of reasoning. I have taken the view that the space which we ordinarily think of, the space of real things (which I would call permeable matter), is different from the space treated of by mathematics. Mathematics will tell us a great deal about space, just as the atomic theory will tell us a great deal about the chemical combinations of bodies. But after all, a theory is not precisely equivalent to the subject with regard to which it is held. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Think of the fourth dimension, not as a new region in space... but as a principle of growth, of change... -from "The Fourth Dimension as Time" This 1913 treatise on the intersection of the mystical and the mathematical implied by Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity is now considered a classic of philosophical physics. Claude Bragdon here first proposed the now mathematically commonplace concept of the "hypercube," or four-dimensional cube (he incorporated 4-D designs into some of his architectural projects), and explores his radical and provocative ideas about the mathematical structure of the universe. Complete with a gallery of Bragdon's gorgeous line drawings illustrating higher space, this is a truly mind-expanding experience. Other works by Bragdon available from Cosimo Classics: More Lives Than One, The Beautiful Necessity, Architecture and Democracy, and Episodes from An Unwritten History. American architect, stage designer, and writer CLAUDE FAYETTE BRAGDON (1866-1946) helped found the Rochester Architectural Club, in the city where he made his greatest mark as a building designer with structures including Rochester Central Station, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the First Universalist Church; he also designed Peterborough Bridge in Ontario. In later life, Bragdon worked on Broadway as scenic designer for 1930s productions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Hamlet, among others.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Space and the Fourth Dimension Ever since mortal man began his humanly mental attempt to learn the Truth about all things, he has endeavored earnestly to apprehend the real nature of space, time, and matter. Hungering for the apprehen sion of the Whole of Truth, he has expanded his thought in many directions, in his mortal effort to encompass in his thought the vast expanse of the universe, into the bygone ages and into those yet before him, only to reach the point Where he must stop, unable to grasp that concept which mortal limitations can never encompass, namely: infinity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Higher Space (the Fourth Dimension) Memory-haunting phrase, often heard, yet little understood. In this slender volume the author has attempted to explain what is meant by it, and to usher the reader into some of those fascinating halls of thought to which it is the door. Although the exposition is along known and already conventional lines, it is hoped that there is enough new and original matter to justify the book, and enough simplicity of presen tation to justify its title, A Primer of Higher Space. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Another World: Or, the Fourth Dimension When we come, however, to further details of this higher world, we have every diversity of belief and superstition. The only account and description of it to which we, as Christians, attach any credence, is found in the Bible, a book which we regard as a revelation of its rulers, inhabitants, and laws, given to man by the supreme Ruler, not only of the spiritual, but of our material world, God. In our own persons we get confirmation of the existence of a higher sphere, in being able consciously to distinguish between our spiritual, intellectual, and moral selves and our bodies and brains, through which we act and by which we live. Materialists will, we know, have none of this. To them, if true to their creed, there is, and can be, nothing beyond the material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Dimension and the Bible Pure mathematics is the vanguard of all the sciences, it has marched centuries in advance of them all. For instance, Calculus was discovered nearly two hundred years before the science of Chemistry was far enough advanced to allow the use of Calculus as. One of its instruments of re search. Practically the same thing is true of all the other physical sciences, including engineering. It may he, therefore, that the science of theology is not yet far enough advanced to admit of the ready use of mathematics as an instrument of research. Today mathematicians are forging ahead into' realms of abstract thought and pure logic as never before; judging from. The past, some of the truths which they are revealing now may not be put to what we are pleased to call practical use for centuries to come. Book excerpt: Joe Cube is a Silicon Valley hotshot--well, a would-be hotshot anyway--hoping that the 3-D TV project he's managing will lead to the big money IPO he's always dreamed of. On New Year's Eve, hoping to impress his wife, he sneaks home the prototype. It brings no new warmth to their cooling relationship, but it does attract someone else's attention. When Joe sees a set of lips talking to him (floating in midair) and feels the poke of a disembodied finger (inside him), it's not because of the champagne he's drunk. He has just met Momo, a woman from the All, a world of four spatial dimensions for whom our narrow world, which she calls Spaceland, is something like a rug, but one filled with motion and life. Momo has a business proposition for Joe, an offer she won't let him refuse. The upside potential becomes much clearer to him once she helps him grow a new eye (on a stalk) that can see in the fourth-dimensional directions, and he agrees. After that it's a wild ride through a million-dollar night in Las Vegas, a budding addiction to tasty purple 4-D food, a failing marriage, eye-popping excursions into the All, and encounters with Momo's foes, rubbery red critters who steal money, offer sage advice and sometimes messily explode. Joe is having the time of his life, until Momo's scheme turns out to have angles he couldn't have imagined. Suddenly the fate of all life here in Spaceland is at stake. Rudy Rucker is a past master at turning mathematical concepts into rollicking science fiction adventure, from Spacetime Donuts and White Light to The Hacker and the Ants. In the tradition of Edwin A. Abbott's classic novel, Flatland, Rucker gives us a tour of higher mathematics and visionary realities. Spaceland is Flatland on hyperdrive! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of the Mechanism of Survival: The Fourth Dimension and Its Applications The highly speculative and extrapolatory character of this book will be evident to all who are bold enough to read it. I wish to make it perfectly clear that I have no intention of dogmatising on so Obscure a subject. The suggestions which follow are purely tentative, and I am well aware that some of them are likely to prove mutually incompatible. But it is only by the bold formulation and ruthless rejection of hypotheses that progress is made, and even if we are compelled to abandon the Higher Space Hypothesis altogether - as is very possible the negative information so gained will be of the greater value if the hypothesis has first been given the fullest possible trial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tertium Organum, or the third canon of thought, gives a new view of the perception of the world. In Tertium Organum, the author offers the shift of the paradigm and speaks of higher consciousness, or the consciousness of the fourth dimension, the domain for the personal development of the human, the ability to control your emotions and actions. The book is inspired by the teachings of Gurdjieff about the Fourth Way. According to this philosophy, there are three ways of self-development: the Way of the Fakir (developing physical body), the Way of the Monk (dealing with the emotions), and the Way of the Yogi (mastering the mind). Yet, there is another way – the Fourth Way that enables a human being to combine all three ways and live in harmony of body, spirit, and mind. Ouspensky applies this theory to the study of time and space, where he defines time as the fourth dimension of space and personality. The book's name is the allusion to the Organum of Aristotle, which laid the basis for the development of science, and the Organum Novus by Francis Bacon, who defined knowledge as only those facts that can be checked empirically._x000D_ _x000D_
