Book Synopsis The Development of Kamakura Rule, 1180-1250 by : Jeffrey Mass
Download or read book The Development of Kamakura Rule, 1180-1250 written by Jeffrey Mass and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1979-06-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of a formative period in medieval Japanese history, this study analyzes the origins and consequences of the Jokyu War of 1221, a struggle of modest military proportions but of major political and legal importance. In defeating the traditional Court at Kyoto, the warrior government at Kamakura became the dominant national power; it subsequently created a highly efficient administration that gave Japan a century of social and political stability. Crucial to the success of Kamakura rule was the development of a system of justice that has long been recognized as one of Japan's outstanding achievements. The author studies this system in detail, describing the forms and techniques for arbitrating disputes and showing exactly how suits were brought, expedited, and resolved. The book includes annotated translations of 144 documents, a selection from the materials on which the book is based. These documents illuminate the changing power relationships after the Jokyu War and the developing stages of the judicial process.

Download or read book The Samurai Swordsman written by Stephen Turnbull and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2008-02-20 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samurai tells the story of the courageous and highly disciplined fighting men of this time, showing how they evolved from the primitive fighters of the seventh century into an invincible military caste with a fearsome reputation. In the early seventh century, the samurai rose to prominence during the struggles between the emperor and the military leaders (shogun). They took part in the invasion of Korea, as well as helping to keep Japan free from foreign influence. From the Heian period through to the Onin wars, the history of the samurai is replete with tales of heroism and bloodshed. Although the samurai is most famous for his use of the sword, he also used a wide variety of other weapons, such as the crossbow, the dagger and the spear. Samurai armour and costume were constantly evolving, and by the twelfth century most samurai were wearing the box-like yoroi armour. Samurai examines samurai fighting tactics, as well as acts such as ritual suicide (hari-kiri) and the taking of enemy heads as trophies.

Book Synopsis Manuscripts and Archives by : Alessandro Bausi
Download or read book Manuscripts and Archives written by Alessandro Bausi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archives are considered to be collections of administrative, legal, commercial and other records or the actual place where they are located. They have become ubiquitous in the modern world, but emerged not much later than the invention of writing. Following Foucault, who first used the word archive in a metaphorical sense as "the general system of the formation and transformation of statements" in his "Archaeology of Knowledge" (1969), postmodern theorists have tried to exploit the potential of this concept and initiated the "archival turn". In recent years, however, archives have attracted the attention of anthropologists and historians of different denominations regarding them as historical objects and "grounding" them again in real institutions. The papers in this volume explore the complex topic of the archive in a historical, systematic and comparative context and view it in the broader context of manuscript cultures by addressing questions like how, by whom and for which purpose were archival records produced, and if they differ from literary manuscripts regarding materials, formats, and producers (scribes).

Book Synopsis World Monarchies and Dynasties by : John Middleton
Download or read book World Monarchies and Dynasties written by John Middleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 2278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, royal dynasties have dominated countries and empires around the world. Kings, queens, emperors, chiefs, pharaohs, czars - whatever title they ruled by, monarchs have shaped institutions, rituals, and cultures in every time period and every corner of the globe. The concept of monarchy originated in prehistoric times and evolved over centuries right up to the present. Efforts to overthrow monarchies or evade their rule - such as the American, French, Chinese, and Russian revolutions - are considered turning points in world history. Even today, many countries retain their monarchies, although in vastly reduced form with little political power. One cannot understand human history and government without understanding monarchs and monarchies. This fully-illustrated encyclopedia provides the first complete survey of all the major rulers and ruling families of the world, past and present. No other reference work approaches the topic with the same sense of magnitude or connection to historical context. Arranged in A-Z format for ease of access, World Monarchies and Dynasties includes information on major monarchs and dynasties from ancient time to the present. This set: includes overviews of reigns and successions, genealogical charts, and dynastic timelines; addresses concepts, problems, and theories of monarchy; provides background and information for further research; highlights important places, structures, symbols, events, and legends related to particular monarchs and dynasties; includes a master bibliography and multiple indexes.
