Book excerpt: This book explains the postcolonial Indian polity by presenting an alternative historical narrative of the British Empire in India and India's struggle for independence. It pursues this narrative along two major trajectories. On the one hand, it focuses on the role of imperial judicial institutions and practices in the making of both the British Empire and the anti-colonial movement under the Congress, with the lawyer as political leader. On the other hand, it offers a novel interpretation of Gandhi's non-violent resistance movement as being different from the Congress. It shows that the Gandhian movement, as the most powerful force largely responsible for India's independence, was anchored not in western discourses of political and legislative freedom but rather in Indic traditions of renunciative freedom, with the renouncer as leader. This volume offers a comprehensive and new reinterpretation of the Indian Constitution in the light of this historical narrative. The book contends that the British colonial idea of justice and the Gandhian ethos of resistance have been the two competing and conflicting driving forces that have determined the nature and evolution of the Indian polity after independence.

Book excerpt: Robert Clive rose into prominence during the 1750s when the war between England and France (on the question of Austrian succession) loomed large on the Eurpean continent. And it inevitably spread its tentacles to India, where both these colonila powers were acting as adherents to the rival puppet pricnes. Clive not only obliterated the French supremacy from India, but also laid here the foundations of the British Empire on a Firm Footing. Although the bluntness of his moral perceptions coult not ensure him a place among th great, yet Clive-for his military and administrative genious-compares favourable with Alexander and Napoleon. Clive, the Founder of the British Empire in India, delineates how the savvy soldier rose from a mere 'writer' to a great military general; how he won the battles of Arkar and Plassey; hwo he won the battles of Arkar and Plassey; how he delath with the internal, military and political problems during the second phase of his administration; and what ultimately made this man a bete noire in England.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founders of the Indian Empire: Clive, Warren Hastings, and Wellesley, Lord Clive In performing my self-allotted task I have striven to be impartial. I am sure I have not written as a partisan. With the admiration I naturally feel for a man who did as much as any man who ever trod this earth to make of this small island in the Atlantic the Queen of nations, her roots spreading all over the world, it is with pain, greater than I can describe, that I have been forced to the conclusions I have recorded in the last chapter. I have done justice, I am certain, to the brilliant genius which changed the future of India; to the daring, the coolness, the energy, the clear-sightedness, the superiority to circumstances, displayed on every trying occasion. The greater, then, is my mortification that I cannot deny the existence of the alloy which, at times of peculiar temptation, disfigured a character which 2 would have been otherwise without reproach.
