Book excerpt: The digital world in which we live today is the result of several developments in automation and science, as well as modernizations and the most recent technologies. At the moment, every country desires to be completely digitised in order for the country to be legitimated in a more effective manner. The phrase “Digital India” refers to the concern about the use of different Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) such as mobile phones, personal computers, tablets, TVs, and other similar devices to promote the country’s development. The Digital India Campaign is a visionary initiative by the Indian government to transform our country into a smart, economically cautious, and digitally legitimised nation through the use of technology. To reconstruct India, the Indian government aspires to provide residents with quality and acceptable administrative services, as well as to promote coordination and synchronisation of obligations among citizens. The Digital India Campaign intends to link the people of India digitally and to convey the different government services and programmes to them via the use of information and communications technology (ICT). The notion of local self-governance is not a new one, since it has its origins in antiquity, dating back to the period of the Mauryan emperors and even before them. The path of local self-governance from the time of the dinosaurs to the present day is depicted in this study. Furthermore, in the current environment, information and communication technology (ICT) has emerged as a successful tool for the dissemination of various e-governance services, and the Government of India has formulated the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) with an adequate service delivery mechanism in this regard. After ICT was introduced, numerous apps were developed by both the federal and state governments that contributed to strengthening of public-private partnerships (PRIs) for rural transformation. The advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has created a plethora of possibilities in rural India. It is feasible for information and communication technologies to make cognition sharing more convenient, and information may be easily transmitted via the use of information and communication technologies. This information might be easily accessed and used by administrators responsible for developing rural development strategies in India. Interactions between the Ministry of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, the Government of India, and the Panchayat Raj Institutions are coordinated. In order to ensure rural development and strengthen rural local government, the primary goal of the e-panchayat is to provide a diverse range of services to its stakeholders. A series of research phases were initiated after the notion of the e-Panchayat. The stages of information gathering and planning, information and service requirements assessment, process re-engineering, and DPR (detailed project report) preparation are all included. Finally, in 2009, with the assistance of the National Information Council, the Indian government launched e-Panchayat (NIC). Along with numerous research papers, this book sheds some insight on the importance of information and communications technology (ICT) in self-governance toward the digital India. On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav a workshop was funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research from July 7th to 16th July,2022. The Chief Guest of The valedictory session was Hon,ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sat Parkash Bansal and Guest of Honour Prof. Kaushal Kumar Sharama from JNU. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of neglect the last decade has witnessed a surge of interest in the medical history of India under colonial rule. This is the first major study of public health in British India. It covers many previously unresearched areas such as European attitudes towards India and its inhabitants, and the way in which these were reflected in medical literature and medical policy; the fate of public health at local level under Indian control; and the effects of quarantine on colonial trade and the pilgrimage to Mecca. The book places medicine within the context of debates about the government of India, and relations between rulers and ruled. In emphasising the active role of the indigenous population, and in its range of material, it differs significantly from most other work conducted in this subject area.

The purpose The purpose of this study is to gain an insight into and make an introductory comparison of the structure of local government in many countries throughout the world. More specifically the aim is to define and describe in a comparative fashion the various organs of local government and their relationships. The need for, as well as the obstacles encountered in, such a survey are perhaps equally obvious. It is said that he who under stands only his own language knows none. It may just as easily be contended that he who understands only his own govern mental institutions knows none. Governmental comparisons are useful not only to find out how others are governed but also to more fully comprehend the role which one's own governmental institutions play. 1 From a pragmatic point of view there is a still further value in making comparisons of local governments. Local government institutions are constantly undergoing changes. The changes are both formal and informal; they may be evolutionary and revolu tionary. A comparative study of local government can help many countries to take advantage of the experiments and experiences of others. From the beginning of recorded history there are indications of man borrowing heavily from the institutions of his neighbour in organizing his own institutions. In local govern ment there are several examples of countries which have set up their local government systems by wholesale copying the model of another.

Book excerpt: Over the past three decades the developing world has seen increasing devolution of political and economic power to local governments. Decentralization is considered an important element of participatory democracy and, along with privatization and deregulation, represents a substantial reduction in the authority of national governments over economic policy. The contributors to Decentralization and Local Governance in Developing Countries examine this institutional transformation from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, offering detailed case studies of decentralization in eight countries: Bolivia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uganda. Some of these countries witnessed an unprecedented "big bang" shift toward comprehensive political and economic decentralization: Bolivia in 1995 and Indonesia after the fall of Suharto in 1998. Brazil and India decentralized in an uneven and more gradual manner. In some other countries (such as Pakistan), devolution represented an instrument for consolidation of power of a nondemocratic national government. In China, local governments were granted much economic but little political power. South Africa made the transition from the undemocratic decentralization of apartheid to decentralization under a democratic constitution. The studies provide a comparative perspective on the political and economic context within which decentralization took place, and how this shaped its design and possible impact. Book excerpt: India became independent in 1947 and, after nearly three years of debate in the Constituent Assembly, adopted a Constitution that came into effect on 26 January 1950. This Constitution has lasted until the present, with its basic structure unaltered, a remarkable achievement given that the generally accepted prerequisites for democratic stability did not exist, and do not exist even today. Half a century of constitutional democracy is something that political scientists and legal scholars need to analyze and explain. This volume examines the career of constitutional-political ideas (implicitly of Western origin) in the text of the Indian Constitution or implicit within it, as well as in actual political practice in the country over the past half-century.
