Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy by : Chetan Ghate
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy written by Chetan Ghate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's remarkable economic growth in recent years has made it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its rapid growth, however, has been accompanied by widening regional disparities, poverty, malnutrition, and socio-political instability. Understanding India's dualistic development process and the emergence of the Indian economic miracle are crucial in solving the obstacles India faces in transforming itself into a modern 21st-century economy. The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy features research on core topics by leading scholars to understand the Indian economic miracle and the key debates confronting the Indian economy. The Handbook moves beyond traditional boundaries by featuring areas of research that will be important in the future, setting an academic standard for current and future research on the Indian economy. The Handbook is divided into eight major sections featuring expert contributions on a host of issues. These range from India's historical development before and after 1947; tackling poverty through innovative public policy; industrialization; health, education, and the demographic transition; governance and institutional reform; macroeconomic policy reform; and India's interaction with the world economy. A final Looking Ahead chapter reflects upon an agenda for economic research in the 21st century. Ambitious in scope, diverse in its coverage of topics, and a rare unified and comprehensive treatment of India's complex and dynamic development process, The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy is a must-read for both researchers who are new to the field, as well as those who want to update and extend their knowledge to the frontier of the field.
Book Synopsis Econophysics & Economics of Games, Social Choices and Quantitative Techniques by : Banasri Basu
Download or read book Econophysics & Economics of Games, Social Choices and Quantitative Techniques written by Banasri Basu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the Physicists and the Economists in recent years in analyzing and modelling various dynamic phenomena in monetary and social systems have led to encouraging developments, generally classified under the title of Econophysics. These developments share a common ambition with the already established field of Quantitative Economics. This volume intends to offer the reader a glimpse of these two parallel initiatives by collecting review papers written by well-known experts in the respective research frontiers in one cover. This massive book presents a unique combination of research papers contributed almost equally by Physicists and Economists. Additional contributions from Computer Scientists and Mathematicians are also included in this volume. The book consists of two parts: the first part concentrates on Econophysics problems and the second part stresses on various quantitative issues in Economics. Both parts specialize on frontier problems in Games and Social Choices.
Download or read book An Uncertain Glory written by Jean Drèze and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When India became independent in 1947 after two centuries of colonial rule, it immediately adopted a firmly democratic political system, with multiple parties, freedom of speech, and extensive political rights. The famines of the British era disappeared, and steady economic growth replaced the economic stagnation of the Raj. The growth of the Indian economy quickened further over the last three decades and became the second fastest among large economies. Despite a recent dip, it is still one of the highest in the world. Maintaining rapid as well as environmentally sustainable growth remains an important and achievable goal for India. In An Uncertain Glory, two of India's leading economists argue that the country's main problems lie in the lack of attention paid to the essential needs of the people, especially of the poor, and often of women. There have been major failures both to foster participatory growth and to make good use of the public resources generated by economic growth to enhance people's living conditions. There is also a continued inadequacy of social services such as schooling and medical care as well as of physical services such as safe water, electricity, drainage, transportation, and sanitation. In the long run, even the feasibility of high economic growth is threatened by the underdevelopment of social and physical infrastructure and the neglect of human capabilities, in contrast with the Asian approach of simultaneous pursuit of economic growth and human development, as pioneered by Japan, South Korea, and China. In a democratic system, which India has great reason to value, addressing these failures requires not only significant policy rethinking by the government, but also a clearer public understanding of the abysmal extent of social and economic deprivations in the country. The deep inequalities in Indian society tend to constrict public discussion, confining it largely to the lives and concerns of the relatively affluent. Drèze and Sen present a powerful analysis of these deprivations and inequalities as well as the possibility of change through democratic practice.
Book Synopsis Development as Freedom by : Amartya Sen
Download or read book Development as Freedom written by Amartya Sen and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Economics by : Yanis Varoufakis
Download or read book Foundations of Economics written by Yanis Varoufakis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Economics breathes life into the discipline by linking key economic concepts with wider debates and issues. By bringing to light delightful mind-teasers, philosophical questions and intriguing politics in mainstream economics, it promises to enliven an otherwise dry course whilst inspiring students to do well. The book covers all the main economic concepts and addresses in detail three main areas: * consumption and choice * production and markets * government and the State. Each is discussed in terms of what the conventional textbook says, how these ideas developed in historical and philosophical terms and whether or not they make sense. Assumptions about economics as a discipline are challenged, and several pertinent students' anxieties ('Should I be studying economics?') are discussed.
Download or read book The India Way written by S. Jaishankar and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade from the 2008 global financial crisis to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic has seen a real transformation of the world order. The very nature of international relations and its rules are changing before our eyes. For India, this means optimal relationships with all the major powers to best advance its goals. It also requires a bolder and non-reciprocal approach to its neighbourhood. A global footprint is now in the making that leverages India's greater capability and relevance, as well as its unique diaspora. This era of global upheaval entails greater expectations from India, putting it on the path to becoming a leading power. In The India Way, S. Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, analyses these challenges and spells out possible policy responses. He places this thinking in the context of history and tradition, appropriate for a civilizational power that seeks to reclaim its place on the world stage.
