Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest It is a glimpse of the human heart, seen like the blue sea off soundings (which has puzzled, and worse, our landsmen critics) with an ugly and awful fact of human nature ever and anon surging up to the surface, like a monster of the deep, and showing its dark form for a moment in the leaping sun-light, then disappearing to seek its native depths. It makes you dizzy the unsteady motion, the sun dancing in the firmament, the masts describing segments of cir cles in the sky, the good ship heeled over, and almost laid on her beam ends, under the press of her cloud-like canvass, and threatening every moment to take in a flood over her bows, and the sight of these sea monsters sporting in the brine? Yet out of these Visions and per ceptions of nature, (our own abysmal nature in a turmoil, ) and the struggle to maintain the balance of the soul, spring Virtues and a purity of conscience of which the world has but a faint idea. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, 1921-1958 This booklet contains an alphabetical list of some 1, 700 research reports put out by staff members of this Station and its cooperators. It represents the product of Federal forest research in the southeast from 1921 through 1958. During the early years, our official name was Appalachian Forest Experiment Station, with a territory consisting of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, eastern Kentucky, and eastern Tennessee. In 1946, the name was changed to Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, and the territory designated as Virginia, North and South Caro lina, Georgia, and Florida. As a result of boundary designations and small staff in the early years, the Appalachian Station worked mainly in studies of southern mountain hardwoods. The Southeastern Station list, which represents later years and an expanded staff, covers many research projects that were carried out also in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. The particular 37 years included in this list have brought fantastic changes, not only in the forests themselves, but in markets, viewpoints, prices, people. The chestnut has gone. The pulpmills have come. Some lands then remote are now heavily used. Trees that had no market are now valuable. Forest practices considered prohibitively expensive are be coming routine. The best research findings, then new, are now so well known we imagine we always knew them. The list is something of a milestone in Station history and in the gradual building of forestry information for use by owners large and small. I like to think this booklet is a monument to 37 years of work by many men. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Management Plan: Prince William Forest Park, Virginia; February, 1999 Prince William Forest Park preserves approximately acres of mixed hardwood forest covering a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed. The park represents one of the largest parcels of undeveloped land in the area and is the third largest unit of the national park system in Virginia. That, combined with the fact that it is the largest example of a piedmont forest ecosystem in the national park system, makes it a significant natural resource. The park also contains two physiographic provinces, the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain, and it straddles the southern and northern climates a transition zone that supports many species to the outer limits of their ranges. This creates a wide diversity of habitat, vegetative communities, and species composition not generally found in any single forest type.
