Book excerpt: On the night of 4 April 1793, two lovers were preparing to compel a cleric to perform a secret ceremony. The wedding of the sixth son of King George III to the daughter of the Earl of Dunmore would not only be concealed – it would also be illegal. Lady Augusta Murray had known Prince Augustus Frederick for only three months but they had already fallen deeply in love and were desperate to be married. However, the Royal Marriages Act forbade such a union without the King's permission and going ahead with the ceremony would change Augusta's life forever. From a beautiful socialite she became a social pariah; her children were declared illegitimate and her family was scorned. In Forbidden Wife Julia Abel Smith uses material from the Royal Archives and the Dunmore family papers to create a dramatic biography set in the reigns of Kings George III and IV against the background of the American and French Revolutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In civilian and military Jewish communities, together with recent voyages on the high seas, I had the privilege of preparing, writing, and presenting topics of relevance to Jewish persons. These opportunities were a special privilege and I took extra care when I put ideas to paper. It was also a thrill to present these topics to the very different communities I was privileged to lead and for them to benefit from this material. This book begins with an outline, of Jewish symbolism and faith, followed by how our perceptions have changed over time, as practiced by the Jewish community. The main section is on the topic of the Jewish Life Cycle, reviewing how life milestones are celebrated in the Jewish community, from birth through death. These traditions and practices are presented from the Ashkenazic tradition, rather than from the Sephardic one. The majority of Jews in the United States derive from and practice the Ashkenazic rite, though Sephardic traditions are present as well. I have roots in the Sephardic heritage but since the Spanish Expulsion in 1492, those traditions were gradually lost and melded into the Ashkenazic communities and practices. I am therefore, more aware of Ashkenazic traditions and focus on this rite exclusively. I also include a reflection on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, how the younger generation assumes responsibility by becoming full members of the Jewish community. The Study of Vexillology, on flags, is a brief review how flags were used in the ancient and modern Jewish communities together with their descriptions. The last two sections are scholarly expositions. The first is on the Mystic View of God and how Jewish mysticism imbues meaning into spirituality, with the awareness of mystic ideas in Jewish belief. The second topic reflects on the idea of God's five 'purchases', each of which provides insight into Jewish belief into how we relate to Deity. I conclude with a tribute to Robert Certain, a man I knew at the United States Air Force Academy. He was a prisoner of war at the Hanoi Hilton, and offers a perspective of the World as it Really Is versus the World as it Should Be. These poignant words reflect our place in the universe and how we go about daily life.

Book excerpt: Volume One of this series is an overview of the Jewish Life Cycle, with laws, customs and traditions from traditional Jewish practice. Original Biblical, Talmudic, or other sources are referenced so the student can continue learning and appreciating the vast scope of why and how such laws and traditions originated. In this regard, the entirety of Jewish life cycle is reviewed, from birth through death, with details on how the practice should be considered with recommendations for practical implementation. Introducing this large topic are two introductory sections, one on Jewish Symbolism and Faith, and the second, on Perceptions Over Time, how our five senses have changed over the course of thousands of years of history. The book also includes a brief overview, together with reflection on select Jewish Annual Cycle holy days, to include: Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Passover and Shavuot. Each of these Jewish holy days has its own traditions, practices, and foods. The details provided for each of these gives the student the opportunity to be aware of, and practice these ancient traditions correctly. The book concludes with tributes to Sam Dreben, my great-great-uncle, known as 'The Fighting Jew' and the two plaques now gracing the stained glass 'Shiviti' in the vestibule of Temple Mount Sinai, El Paso, Texas. I also included a reflection of two worlds, the real and ideal, we all struggle for. The last reflection is from Chaplain Robert Certain, previously an Air Force navigator, who was shot down over North Vietnam and spent time as a Prisoner of War in the 'Hanoi Hilton.'

Book Synopsis Evolving Halakhah by : Rabbi Dr. Moshe Zemer
Download or read book Evolving Halakhah written by Rabbi Dr. Moshe Zemer and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential reference work for any thinking student of religion. Innovative and provocative, Evolving Halakhah affirms the system of traditional Jewish law, Halakhah, as a developing and moral structure, flexible enough to accommodate the changing realities of each generation. In this accessible analysis of Halakhah, Moshe Zemer issues a clarion call to follow the ancient and modern principles of evolving Halakhah, which demands ethical deeds, the discovery of holiness in the Commandments, a critical approach to the Tradition, and responsibility of the entire Community of Israel. These principles are viewed as the framework in which the other commandments are applied. To Jews who sometimes see no choices but those of fundamentalist rigidity on the one hand, or total rejection of tradition on the other, Zemer argues instead for awareness of the inherent flexibility of the halakhic system. Halakhah, he argues, has had many voices, and has changed to meet every generation’s needs. Equipped with this view, liberal Jews can reclaim their tradition from a conservative rabbinic establishment that all too often—especially in Israel—has seen the voice of strictness as more authentic than the voice of lovingkindness. The product of Zemer’s thirty-five years of work in the Israel Movement of Progressive Judaism, Evolving Halakhah includes chapters on matters ranging from personal status, especially marriage and conversion, through the “political” Halakhah of a response to the intifada. It shows that the traditional framework for understanding the Torah’s commandments can be the living heart of Jewish life for all Jews—including Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative, and Modern Orthodox.
Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Marriage in the Medieval Age by : Joanne M. Ferraro
Download or read book A Cultural History of Marriage in the Medieval Age written by Joanne M. Ferraro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage in Europe became a central pillar of society during the medieval period. Theologians, lawyers, and secular and church leaders agreed on a unique outline of the institution and its legal framework, the essential features of which remained in force until the 1980s. The medieval Western European definition of marriage was unique: before the legal consequences of marriage came into being, the parties had to promise to engage in sexual union only with one partner and to remain in the marriage until one of the parties died. This requirement had profound implications for inheritance rules and for the organization of the family economy; it was explained and justified in a multitude of theological discussions and legal decisions across all faiths on the European continent. Normative texts, built on the foundations of the scriptures of several religious traditions, provided an impressive intellectual framework around marriage. In addition, developments in iconography, including sculpture and painting, projected the dominant model of marriage, while social, demographic and cultural changes encouraged its adoption. This volume traces the medieval discussion of marriage in practice, law, theology and iconography. It provides an examination of the wider political and economic context of marriage and offers an overview of the ebb and flow of society's ideas about how expressions of human sexuality fit within the confines of a clearly defined social structure and ideology. A Cultural History of Marriage in the Medieval Age presents an overview of the period with essays on Courtship and Ritual; Religion, State and Law; Kinship and Social Networks; the Family Economy; Love and Sex; the Breaking of Vows; and Representations of Marriage.
Book Synopsis Between Betrothal and Bedding by : Mia Korpiola

Book excerpt: Swedish medieval marriage formation was a process, written down in the secular laws. However, it started to evolve because of the interaction with the medieval Catholic marriage doctrine, which focused on mutual words of consent. Although first the canon law of marriage, and then Lutheran marriage dogma influenced the Swedish development, the perception of marriage as a process, consisting of several legal acts and accompanied by property transfers, proved remarkably resilient. The pragmatic and rural character of Sweden contributed to this, despite pressure from canon and Roman law and attempts at bringing marriage formation under ecclesiastical control. Marrying by stages was in itself unremarkable in Europe, but the legal foundation and formality make medieval and sixteenth-century Sweden a unique case study.
