The estimated population of the combined regions reached 385 million in 1964, roughly 11 percent of the world's total. Agricultural data available for the area permit the preparation of food balances for only 30 countries in West Asia and Africa. The thoughtful reader will realize that statistics of' food production and utilization for some of the 30 countries covered by these food balances are only marginally better than statistics for some of the 45 political entities not covered. Although the agriculture practiced throughout the area is mainly of the subsistence type, there is'a significant commercial sector. This part of the world is the major source of such important internationally traded commodities as oil palm products, cocoa, long staple cotton, and dates, and an important source of coffee, peanuts, rubber, tobacco, citrus, and filberts. Food consumption per per son, in terms of calories is generally low. In most parts of the region the diet is characterized by a heavy dependency on inexpensive starchy foods, with consequent protein deficiencies. Agricultural production occupies the major part of the labor force and accounts for a large part of the exports of the region. Food production, however, is supplemented slightly by imports, mainly of wheat and wheat flour, sugar, canned meat, and milk. Four-fifths or more depend on agriculture for a living. Commercial agriculture has made marked progress in many parts of the area, as is indicated by the fact that it is the world's major source of palm oil produce, cocoa, long staple cotton, and dates, and a leading supplier of coffee, peanuts, flue-cured tobacco, oriental tobacco, citrus, and filberts. Most of the farmers, however, practice a subsistence type of agriculture. Food output per capita is generally low, and the area's production is supplemented to only a minor extent by imports, consisting mostly of wheat and wheat flour, sugar, and some canned meat and milk. Thus, food consumption levels are generally low, though the average per capita, in terms of energy value, is higher for the area as a whole than for the densely populated Far East. It also appears to be higher in nearly all countries of Western Asia, Northern Africa, and Southern Africa. In most parts of these regions, however, heavy dependence on starchy foods is as characteristic of the diet as in the Far East.
