Book Synopsis Philadelphia Noir by : Carlin Romano
Download or read book Philadelphia Noir written by Carlin Romano and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A collection enhanced by an unerring sense of place, with no clinkers . . . that will please the most discriminating lovers of the dark side.” —Kirkus Reviews From its posh Main Line to its blue-collar enclaves, Philadelphia is a city of contrasts. History has shown that brotherly love and murderous intentions can exist, if not side-by-side, then at least on the same block. Its this dichotomy that gives local writers their inspiration in this gritty collection of stories from Meredith Anthony, Diane Ayres, Cordelia Frances Biddle, Keith Gilman, Cary Holladay, Solomon Jones, Gerald Kolpan, Aimee LaBrie, Halimah Marcus, Carlin Romano, Asali Solomon, Laura Spagnoli, Duane Swierczynski, Dennis Tafoya, and Jim Zervanos. “It took long enough for Akashic’s noir series to get to Philly. Now that it has, compiled under the shadowy auspices of Inquirer literary critic/West Philly native Carlin Romano, the fun begins.” —Philadelphia City Paper “One of the US’s oldest, and darkest cities has a collection of its own . . . Overall, this collection was excellent, but left me wanting more.” —MostlyFiction Book Reviews

Book Synopsis Memoirs in Poetry by : Pastor Felix Hill
Download or read book Memoirs in Poetry written by Pastor Felix Hill and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My poems are about real life experiences. The stories are true, The Lord gave me the ability to make them all rhyme. I wrote some of them when I was very sad, because of the death of a very close family member. Some was written when I was happy, I remember things in my childhood that made me very happy and also some are about some of the mistakes that I made before I was born again. I had dreams for a long time of the mistakes that I, had made, and they did not stop until I was forgiven by the Lord Jesus Christ. When I became a preacher I begin to write about the people God used in My Christian life. The preachers in my book are real, and they are some of my bestfriends, they helped me get started in the ministry. We are all older now and we share in our life experiences. The poems would come to my mind as I began to think about my life and all the things that I had done and the people that I was blessed to know and have a relationship with. I thank God for the ability to write life experiences in poetry.

Book Synopsis Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me? by : Mike O'Connor
Download or read book Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me? written by Mike O'Connor and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of humorous Q&As about everything you've always wanted to ask about birds and birding Mike O’Connor knows bird watchers as well as he knows birds. He knows that if you’re even slightly interested in identifying birds or attracting them to your backyard with a feeder, then you’ve also had your share of strange and silly questions about birds and their sometimes inexplicable behavior. In Why Do Bluebirds Hate Me?, O’Connor applies his deep knowledge of all things avian to answer the questions that keep birders up at night. Questions like · Should you clean your birdhouses? · Do swallows have a feather fetish? · How much does it cost to run a heated birdbath? · Is drinking coffee bad for birds? Other questions O’Connor covers range from the practical (Should I rotate the seed in my feeder?) to the quirky (Why are vultures eating my vinyl screen door?) to the just plain adorable (Are those birds kissing or feeding each other?). And he also explains why bluebirds just don’t seem to like some people.
Book Synopsis A Swim in a Pond in the Rain by : George Saunders
Download or read book A Swim in a Pond in the Rain written by George Saunders and published by Random House. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Booker Prize–winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo and Tenth of December comes a literary master class on what makes great stories work and what they can tell us about ourselves—and our world today. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/DIAMONSTEIN-SPIELVOGEL AWARD • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, NPR, Time, San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Town & Country, The Rumpus, Electric Lit, Thrillist, BookPage • “[A] worship song to writers and readers.”—Oprah Daily For the last twenty years, George Saunders has been teaching a class on the Russian short story to his MFA students at Syracuse University. In A Swim in a Pond in the Rain, he shares a version of that class with us, offering some of what he and his students have discovered together over the years. Paired with iconic short stories by Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Gogol, the seven essays in this book are intended for anyone interested in how fiction works and why it’s more relevant than ever in these turbulent times. In his introduction, Saunders writes, “We’re going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world, made for a specific purpose that our time maybe doesn’t fully endorse but that these writers accepted implicitly as the aim of art—namely, to ask the big questions, questions like, How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyway, and how might we recognize it?” He approaches the stories technically yet accessibly, and through them explains how narrative functions; why we stay immersed in a story and why we resist it; and the bedrock virtues a writer must foster. The process of writing, Saunders reminds us, is a technical craft, but also a way of training oneself to see the world with new openness and curiosity. A Swim in a Pond in the Rain is a deep exploration not just of how great writing works but of how the mind itself works while reading, and of how the reading and writing of stories make genuine connection possible.
