Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical programme of work has been undertaken to study film thicknesses, flux distributions, roll separating forces and roll power requirements in a variety of stable, two-roll coating operations. In addition, a study has been made of the conditions which lead to flow instabilities in such operations. two-roll laboratory coating rig has been constructed to study the pick-up of liquid by a rotating cylinder immersed in a liquid bath and its subsequent transfer to a second roll. Rolls of diameters 10 cm and 20 cm have been used, at rotational speeds in the range 3-120 r.p.m. The gap between the rolls has been varied in the range 0.1 to 3.0 mm. A variety of Newtonian liquids in the viscosity range 0.05 to 1.7 Nsm -2 have been used in the experimental programme. Also tests have been conducted with aqueous polymer (CMC) solutions which were shear thinning but inelastic. ...........

The major application we have in mind is the simulation of the dynamics ofthe various physical phenomena which arise in a polymer process treated as a complex engineering system.
