Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Book About Roses, 1921 In presenting this 1921 edition of A Little Book About Roses to a rose-loving and rose-buying public, it is done with a confidence and satisfaction born of success. It was sixteen years ago that the first edition of this booklet was issued. This was after the writer had spent ten years of loving devotion to the flower more generally adored than any other given us by a beauty-loving Creator. Ambitious and hopeful as I then was, I little dreamed of the possibilities that lay before me. In launching a local business one can usually figure out the maximum probabilities, but in a new business of national and even inter national scope one can hardly foretell or foresee the possible results - always provided that the article offered possesses inherent merit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from We Bring Roses, Beautiful Fresh Roses, Dewy as the Morning and Coloured as the Dawn, 1921 At this time it is closely associated with the tame rose; a small eye or bud from Betty or Etoile de France or other variety of tame rose is budded or grafted to the root-neck of the Wild seedling and tied firmly until the two blend and grow as one. Retaining the vigor of its wild days in its roots, the wild bush is cut off and the tame bush blooms forth a thing of beauty and ajoy. At the end of its second year, it is ready to go out into the world to meet its new guardian, the Rose Lover, and to be fed and cultivated through its appointed term growing and thriving in proportion to the care and affection bestowed upon it. But, as you may well realize, the early days of the seedling require by far the greatest care. If anything fails here, the rose fails. It is a thorough appreciation of this fact that has led us to put so much careful study on this phase of rose-culture, and which has caused us to take such care of the roses' welfare during their early days. A long experience has shown that the soils of New Brunswick are ideal, and the same experience has taught just what must be done and just What must be avoided, to produce Hardy Budded Field Grown Roses of the highest type. As for loving them you should see the smiles of their earlier guardians, our nurserymen, when they look over our fields, blooming with their countless flowers and sturdy branches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beautiful Flowers: And Other Selections Who Should Bear The Blame? T'was at the depot, in a city, On grand Lake Erie's shore, When I chanced while there in waiting, Mid the rumble and the roar, Of the carriages and street cars, As they passed from street to street, Carrying souls to happy endings, Some, perhaps, sad fate to meet. I say t'was while I chanced was waiting For my train that I did see, Two men leisurely approaching, With a boy not over three Years of age who tightly held, Between his rose pink lips to mar, The beauty of that little one, A freshly lighted cigar. The father soon I saw was bending, O'er his child and then did take, The cigar from out those pink lips, But the child with look of hate, Grasped and struggled with the father, For what seemed to him a joy, Which the father then had taken, From his little brown eyed boy. The father soon of course was master Of his child of tender years, Placed the bone of his contention, Boldly and without a fear, To his own stained lips, then smiling, As he to his friend spoke low; His companion then said laughing, Now, I guess you've spoiled him, Joe? Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Last Diary, 1921 Supplied the inspiration of Enjoying Life, the volume of essays that revealed him more distinctively in the character of a naturalist and a man of letters. Still, the diary was primarily written for himself. It was his means of self-expression, the secret chamber of his soul into which no other person, how ever deep in his love and confidence, might penetrate. More than once I asked him to let me look at those parts which he thought suitable for publication, but shyly he turned aside the suggestion with the remark: Some day, perhaps, but not now. All I ever saw was a part of the first essay in Eiybying Life, and an account of his wanderings in a spirit of burning exultation over the great stretch of sandy burrows at the estuary of that beautiful Devonshire river, the Taw, where in long days of solitude he first taught himself with the zeal and patience of the born naturalist the ways of birds and fish and insects, and learnt to love the sweet harmony of the sunlight and the flowers; where, too, as a mere boy he first meditated upon the mysteries of life and death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Day: May Thirtieth, 1921 Here I am at that little spot I've come so many thousand miles to find, and if my letter is hard to read you'll understand, for the tears are streaming down my face, as I write in a strange mixture of emotions. I am Sitting at the foot of his little white cross, nicely painted. I've said my Rosary and strewed his sleeping place With poppies and a few other flowers. I've taken a picture of it for you, and Will take others during the next few days when I come It is very quiet here - nothing to be heard but the sound of the skylarks, and they sing all the time. The cemetery is on a little slope and stretches before me, row after row of little White crosses, with an American flag floating high over them all. It is lovely! There are flower beds on the Sides, but on the graves them selves there is only grass or cut flowers; so that all are alike. They face the East, these men of ours, and I can imagine how the early rays of the rising sun strike the shining faces of the crosses, and how at sunset the last beams throw the shadows of this symbol over the resting places of our lads, with the arms outstretched as if covering them forever and ever in peace. And I am so glad to be here. I just sat down on the earth at the foot of his grave, and I thought and thought. I am sad - I am happy I am rested - just being here, and you would be too. It was hard to part with him, so I am sad. But he died as a brave soldier should and as he would have chosen to go, and for the flag, so I'm glad. And in this beautiful, quiet spot, so calm, so peaceful, so pretty, the busy World seems far away, and its troubles and turmoil seem of little account, so I am rested and contented. Seeing this place as I do, I am more convinced than ever that Al would rather stay here, seemingly still in service with his men, row after row of them, the most striking monument we could ever erect to our beloved country, and the part she played in the war. On the right, as you approach the cemetery, runs a road; on the left is a lovely field of grain, and all around runs a border of poppies. I put some on his grave, and shall press one that nestled close to his little cross, as I took the picture. I did not look for any of the other graves today - this day was just Al's, but the next time I come I'll find the others and take pictures of them for their folks at home.
