Book excerpt: National income and products estimates are used extensively worldwide. During the 1950's P. Studenski's work `The Income of Nations' became a classic on the topic. With more extensive compilations, more sophisticated applications, the results and methodology and far reaching international agreements, the international comparability in accounts is now insured. This volume supplements the earlier research in national accounting with a historical overview that shows the development in national income and product accounts. Readers: researchers and professionals in economy, statistics and accounting.

Book excerpt: To support the understanding that banks’ debt issuance means money creation, while centralized nonbank financial institutions’ and decentralized bond market intermediary lending does not, the paper aims to convey two related points: First, the notion of money creation as a result of banks’ loan creation is compatible with the notion of liquid funding needs in a multi-bank system, in which liquid fund (reserve) transfers across banks happen naturally. Second, interest rate-based monetary policy has a bearing on macroeconomic dynamics precisely due to that multi-bank structure. It would lose its impact in the hypothetical case that only one (“singular”) commercial bank would exist. We link our discussion to the emergence and design of central bank digital currencies (CBDC), with a special focus on how loans would be granted in a CBDC world.

Contributors consider the housing mobility and living arrangements of the elderly, their labor force participation and retirement, the economics of their health care, and their financial status. The goal of the research is to further our understanding both of the factors that determine the well-being of the elderly and of the consequences that follow from an increasingly older population with longer individual life spans. Each paper is accompanied by critical commentary.
