Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Floral Symbolism of the Great Masters This little book has been written for the pleasure of those amateurs who are more interested in the idea which inspires a picture than in the picture's workmanship. Naturally, the more accomplished the artist, the more clearly and attractively is he able to set forth his meaning; but with art criticism this book has nothing to do, and the attributions are, for the most part, simply those of the official catalogues of the respective galleries. To explain completely even so small a branch of Christian symbolism as that of flowers, an exhaustive knowledge is required of the development of Christian theology, and of the varying force with which different doctrines appealed at different times to the public mind. But still, these notes may be of some interest to those who care to trace in the work sanctioned by the Church and reverenced by the people the history of Western idealism, and who are sometimes puzzled by the conventions employed by the Masters to illustrate the Divine Mysteries. Book Synopsis The Language of Flowers by : Beverly Seaton
Download or read book The Language of Flowers written by Beverly Seaton and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author traces the phenomenon of ascribing sentimental meaning to floral imagery from its beginnings in Napoleonic France through its later transformations in England and America. At the heart of the book is a depiction of what the three most important flower books from each of the countries divulge about the period and the respective cultures. Seaton shows that the language of flowers was not a single and universally understood correlation of flowers to meanings that men and women used to communicate in matters of love and romance. The language differs from book to book, country to country. To place the language of flowers in social and literary perspective, the author examines the nineteenth-century uses of flowers in everyday life and in ceremonies and rituals and provides a brief history of floral symbolism. She also discusses the sentimental flower book, a genre especially intended for female readers. Two especially valuable features of the book are its table of correlations of flowers and their meanings from different sourcebooks and its complete bibliography of language of flower titles. This book will appeal not only to scholars in Victorian studies and women's studies but also to art historians, book collectors, museum curators, historians of horticulture, and anyone interested in nineteenth-century popular culture.

Book Synopsis The Language of Flowers by : Robert Tyas
Download or read book The Language of Flowers written by Robert Tyas and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language of Flowers: Floral Emblems of Thoughts, Feelings, and Sentiments Before the different languages which are now common among men were developed, various animate and inanimate objects were made use of instead of words, for the purpose of giving expression to thoughts. Animals, birds, and flowers were emblems of individuals and their characteristics; and though sometimes erroneously assigned, they are yet very generally adopted. Lions and foxes, eagles and hawks, and an almost endless number of quadrupeds and fowls of the air, have been thus applied and are still; yet, since most of us are little familiar with beasts and birds of prey, in these days of high civilization, it is natural that we should make choice of objects which are mixed up with our daily life, when we desire to give expression to our opinions or feelings by means of symbols rather than words. In the vegetable kingdom we find objects most suitable for this purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She paints the flowers before we copy them, and writes their simple story for us to tell again. We have put upon the first page of our book a charming flower, which she also displays upon the opening leaves of the great floral book of the year. The story of its modest life is not a long or a startling one, but perhaps it has a cheery word of hope, which weary, wintry hearts, longing for spring, may be glad to hear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower-Finder N 0 special study or training is required to follow these charts. It will only be necessary, for one not familiar with botanical terms, to master the directions, particularly the directions regarding the form and arrangement Of the leaves and flowers. So much botanical knowledge it will harm no one to acquire. Peculiarities of the plants, flowers, and fruits, obvious to the non-botanist, but fairly constant, have been selected, while botanical terms have been as far as possible avoided and replaced by words in common use. I should be sorry if this plan suggests that it is not worth while to learn the scientific Classification of the flowers, or that it is a matter of no interest to study their habits and their method of fertilization. But the main object of this book is to facilitate the recognition of the flowers and fruits; it is little likely that anyone interested enough to go so far will go no farther. If a flower has eluded the searcher I have generally found it due to the fact that the charts have been tried without study ing the explanatory chapter. The commonest stumbling-block has been the failure to learn the meaning of the terms shrub and herb, composite flower, and compound leaf. For the families and the Latin names Gray's Manual (seventh Edition) has been followed. For other Latin names Britton and Brown should be consulted. These authorities have been my main reliance for facts, though many other books have been consulted. In names likely to be mispronounced, the grave accent is inserted for the long sound, the acute for the short, as in the Manual. In case the derivation of the generic name is not given it may generally be assumed it is either unknown or is an original plant name. Book Synopsis Giorgio Vasari's Teachers by : Liana Cheney
Download or read book Giorgio Vasari's Teachers written by Liana Cheney and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the artistic, cultural, and historical influence of Giorgio Vasari's teachers, mentors, and patrons on his sacred and profane paintings. As a Maniera artist, Vasari learns to admire and assimilate the art of the ancient masters. With the guidance of Dante's literary writings and Marsilio Ficino's Neoplatonic philosophy, Vasari reveals a moral and didactic vision in his art. Additionally, Vasari's artistic patronage is influenced by the political views of Niccolò Machiavelli. In the integration of both ancient art and myths with the didactic legacy of biblical figures and moral personifications, Vasari manifests his artistic theory and symbolism in his sacred and profane paintings.
