Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Cheshire When he first came to London, the Saturday Review was still in its early youth, and, under the skilful guidance of the very shrewd, though highly eccentric, John Douglas Cook, kept a sharp look-out for youthful talent as it emerged from the Universities. Maine, Lord Salisbury, Stephen, Harcourt, Bagehot, Goldwin Smith, Charles Bowen, and many more afterwards heard of, were either actually writing for it, or had very recently been doing so, when John Warren first contributed to its columns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque Cheshire Complaints have been made to me that I love the country too much. That I love it I do not deny; too much is another matter. Now that the dweller in the town can by train or awheel easily find himself far from the toil and turmoil of the necessary city, the love of the country grows apace. Let me offer this book, not as a county history, not as an antiquarian or archaeological treatise, not even as a cycling guide, but as a short appreciative description of the county I know the best and love the most. Though written as a continuous tour I did not cover the whole of the ground at one time; during the spring and summer of this year I visited the various places mentioned. Many of them I had seen before, some of them very frequently; and the more I see of them the more I wish to see. The time-honoured village church with all its old-world associations, the ancient home with its crowded historical interests, the peaceful mere, the old timbered park, and the tree-shaded lane may be visited again and again and never grow stale; the wooded sandstone hills, the rugged grit escarpments, and the wild open moorlands, in any weather, are places of everlasting joy at whatsoever season of the year we see them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cambridge British Flora, Vol. 2: Salicaceae to Chenopodiacae, Text It is a truism to state that knowledge has no finality; but there is need to emphasise the fact that the knowledge of even a limited flora like that of the British Islands is not only now in a state of flux, but always must be, so long as botanists continue to investigate it. Discoveries are frequently made of plants which, though known to the botanists of other countries, have not previously been distinguished in the British Islands; and occasionally plants are found in these islands which have previously escaped observation altogether. The knowledge of the distribution of the members of the British flora is being constantly augmented, whilst, at the same time, it is being rendered more precise. The knowledge too of the nomenclature of British plants is constantly being increased; and unfortunately this knowledge sometimes necessitates the adoption of an unfamiliar name. We hope that this increased nomenclatorial knowledge will eventually result in a greater degree of stabilisation; but we regret to record our belief that finality in the names of plants is no more possible than finality in any other branch of knowledge. The work will be completed in about ten volumes of which the present (volume II) is the first to appear. This will be followed by Volume III: the order of appearance of the remaining volumes will be announced in due course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Flora, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising the Phaenogamous, or Flowering Plants, and the Ferns The object which the Author proposed to himself, in preparing a new Flora of the British Empire, was of a. Twofold nature lstly, to provide the young Student with a description of our native plants, arranged according to the simplest method; and 2dly, to afiord to the more experienced Botanist, a manual, that should be useful in the field as well as in the closet. In regard to the first object, the experience of nearly an hundred years has proved to every unprejudiced mind, that no system has appeared which can be compared to that of the immortal Swede for the faciliq with which it enables any one, hitherto unprac tised in Botany, to arrive at a knowledge of the Genus and Species of a plant. - The Linnaean Method is, therefore, here still, though not exclusively, adopted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lays and Legends of Cheshire: With Other Poems and Ballads Few of the following Ballads were written during visits to Lyme in the lifetime of the late Mr. Legh, and at the suggestion of Mrs. Legh, and appeared in a small volume printed in 1861, entitled Sir Percy Legh. Two of them, with some slight alterations, were included in the Ballads and Legends of Cheshire, collected by the late Colonel Egerton Leigh, and published in 1867, So many of the old houses in the two counties palatine have disappeared within the last half century, and so many of the legends and traditions connected with them have been lost, that it is desirable the latter, whenever discovered, should receive either in prose or verse some form calculated to give them permanency. Those to which the author has endeavoured to give a metrical form have been communicated to him by friends in possession of the houses to which they relate, or who were in some other way connected with them.
