Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flat Hat Club and the Phi Beta Kappa Society: Some New Light on Their History In going through the letters and manuscripts of St. George Tucker, which form part of the collection of his grand-daughter, Mrs. Cynthia B. T. Coleman, I came across a little memorandum book kept by him, when he was a student at William and Mary College. In this book I discovered the formal "testimony of friendship of the society," or, as it might be called, the certificate of membership in the society. In a second memorandum book I found a catalog of the books which the Reverend Mr. Gwatkin suggested should be purchased for the Club library. Later I found letters of Thomas Jefferson, and of Thomas McAuley, relative to the early history of the Phi Beta Kappa. It is with the hope that some additional light may be thrown upon the history of college fraternities in the United States, that I present this material in the present form. Some societies that are hundreds of years old - like the Illuminati and the Freemasons - are still relevant today. Or, at least, they are thought to be. But why? After all this time, why do people still care about things like that? Whatever it is, Inside Secret Societies gets to the bottom of it. We're taking the oath to reveal some of the more secretive of the secret societies, as well as some of the less secretive ones. Packed with plenty of minutiae and little known facts, this will be popular addition to those into manifestos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic biography of Jefferson. Among the many contributions of this authoritative study was Malone's inclusion in each volume of a detailed timeline of Jefferson's activities and frequent travels in his life. Malone's volumes were widely praised for their lucid and graceful writing style, for their rigorous and thorough scholarship, and for their attention to Jefferson's evolving constitutional and political thought. Later, however, some reviewers faulted Malone, believing he had a tendency to adopt Jefferson's own perspective and thus to be insufficiently critical of his occasional political errors, faults, and lapses. Some said that he was biased in favor of Jefferson and against his principal adversaries Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and John Marshall. Also, during the period in which this was being written, historical studies of slavery and its influences in the United States expanded dramatically. Some academics said that Malone did not adequately treat Jefferson's life as a slaveowner and the paradoxes inherent in his views on liberty and slavery.--Adapted from Wikipedia, 11/2016.

As a founding member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, Jefferson helps to obtain builders for the infant institution, responds to those seeking professorships, and orchestrates the establishment of a classical preparatory school in Charlottesville. In a letter to Vine Utley, Jefferson details his daily regimen of a largely vegetarian diet, bathing his feet in cold water each morning, and horseback riding. Continuing to indulge his wide-ranging intellectual interests, Jefferson receives publications on the proper pronunciation of Greek and discusses the subject himself in a letter to John Adams. Jefferson also experiences worrying and painful events, including hailstorm damage at his Poplar Forest estate, a fire in the North Pavilion at Monticello, the illness of his slave Burwell Colbert, and a fracas in which Jefferson's grandson-in-law Charles Bankhead stabs Jefferson's grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph on court day in Charlottesville. Worst of all, Jefferson's financial problems greatly increase when the bankruptcy of his friend Wilson Cary Nicholas leaves Jefferson responsible for $20,000 in notes he had endorsed for Nicholas.

Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated volume examines the major figures of the Transcendentalist movement and explores the places that inspired them. Beginning with Transcendentalism’s birth in Boston and Cambridge, the book charts the development of a movement that revolutionized American ideas about the artistic, spiritual, and natural worlds. At the same time, it creates a vivid sense of New England in the nineteenth century, from its idyllic countryside and sleepy towns to its bustling ports and burgeoning cities. The book is divided geographically into chapters, each focusing on a town or village famous for its relationship to one or more of the Transcendentalists.
