Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of Mediterranean imaginaries in one of the preeminent tropes of Italian history: the formation or 'making of' Italians. While previous scholarship on the construction of Italian identity has often focused too narrowly on the territorial notion of the nation-state, and over-identified Italy with its capital, Rome, this book highlights the importance of the Mediterranean Sea to the development of Italian collective imaginaries. From this perspective, this book re-interprets key historical processes and actors in the history of modern Italy, and thereby challenges mainstream interpretations of Italian collective identity as weak or incomplete. Ultimately, it argues that Mediterranean imaginaries acted as counterweights to the solidification of a 'national' Italian identity, and still constitute alternative but equally viable modes of collective belonging.

Diabetes is an unforgiving disease that afflicts many Americans and globally. Science and researchers continue the quest for a cure for this potentially deadly disease that affects individuals and their families both physically and emotionally. Any dog lover will tell you the love they share with their dog is like no other, perhaps because of the therapy they provide for that individual. Today's dog, however, is capable of so much more. They can be trained to use their instinct to the advantage of a person who is unaware that their glucose is dropping or rising to a dangerous level. These dogs are now known as Diabetic and Glycemic Alert Dogs. Diabetic and Glycemic Alert Dogs can provide a tool to better glucose control and emotional support to people who are hyperglycemic as well as those with hypoglycemia. DOG, A Diabetic's Best Friend. Is a Diabetic and Glycemic Alert Dog Training Guide to selecting, assessing, understanding, training, and maintaining a Diabetic and Glycemic Alert Dog. The training methods used are fun, positive, and help harness the power of the human-dog bond.

Download or read book Biomimetics written by Yoseph Bar-Cohen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature is the world's foremost designer. With billions of years of experience and boasting the most extensive laboratory available, it conducts research in every branch of engineering and science. Nature's designs and capabilities have always inspired technology, from the use of tongs and tweezers to genetic algorithms and autonomous legged robots. Taking a systems perspective rather than focusing narrowly on materials or chemistry aspects, Biomimetics: Biologically Inspired Technologies examines the field from every angle. The book contains pioneering approaches to biomimetics including a new perspective on the mechanization of cognition and intelligence, as well as defense and attack strategies in nature, their applications, and potential. It surveys the field from modeling to applications and from nano- to macro-scales, beginning with an introduction to principles of using biology to inspire designs as well as biological mechanisms as models for technology. This innovative guide discusses evolutionary robotics; genetic algorithms; molecular machines; multifunctional, biological-, and nano- materials; nastic structures inspired by plants; and functional surfaces in biology. Looking inward at biological systems, the book covers the topics of biomimetic materials, structures, control, cognition, artificial muscles, biosensors that mimic senses, artificial organs, and interfaces between engineered and biological systems. The final chapter contemplates the future of the field and outlines the challenges ahead. Featuring extensive illustrations, including a 32-page full-color insert, Biomimetics: Biologically Inspired Technologies provides unmatched breadth of scope as well as lucid illumination of this promising field.
