Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Germans in North America and the German Element of New Netherland Most of the early German settlers of Maryland came from Virginia, New Netherland and New Sweden. The best known are the Herrman and Hacke families, and Johann Lederer. Augfustin Herrman, who spent the most important time of his life in New Amsterdam, is known as the first surveyor of Maryland and designer of the first map of Lord Baltimore's colony; for this work he was granted a large tract of land in Cecil County (Bohemia Manor) Johann Lederer, a native of Hamburg, who immortalized himself as the discoverer of the Virginia Valley, was naturalized in J67I. The Labadists during their travels in Maryland meta settler named Commegys from Vienna and at a plantation "a person who spoke high Dutch ... a kind of proctor or advocate in the courts." Carolina The first German of renown who set foot on Carolina soil was Johann Lederer. This was in 1670. In the following year, perhaps in connection with his exploring tours, the colony "received a great addition to its strength" from Dutch people of New York. According to Bernheim, who claims he has his information from the old chroniclers, the majority of these Dutch were Lutherans. This, if true, would partly explain the disappearance of a number of German Lutherans from New York about this period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often overlooked because of their high degree of assimilation, people of German descent are actually the largest single ethnic group in the United States. German culture is far more rooted in America than commonly thought. For example, hot dogs, hamburgers and beer wouldn't be classic American staples without German immigrants. In addition to enormous contributions to mainstream beer culture and food culture, they have also added to America's agriculture, religious values and economy. This history highlights German contributions to America, examining their roles from the earliest colonies through the settlement of the Old Northwest and past the Interwar Period. While most German immigrants belonged to the main Lutheran and Reformed churches, a diverse cast of immigrant groups is encountered, including Moravians, Huguenots, and Rhinelanders. Through them, discover the long-standing history of the German descendants and their impact in the United States beginning more than 200 years ago.

The major role they played in the founding of this nation has not been told often enough. This excellent text makes a fine presentation of the history of German people in America down through the American Revolution. Chapters include: Conditions In Germany Which Led To Emigration; Penn's Visit To Germany; Germantown; The Labadists In Maryland; The Woman In The Wilderness; German Valley, New Jersey; Kocherthal's Colony; The Great Exodus Of The Palatines; Pequae And The Mennonites; The Dunkers And Ephrata; The Schwenkfelder And Christopher Dock; The Progress Of Settlement In The Valley Of Virginia And Maryland; The Germans In South Carolina; German Colonization In New England; The Salzburgers In Georgia And The Pennsylvania Germans In North Carolina; The German Press; The Moravians; Conrad Weiser And The Frontier Wars; The "Royal American" Regiment; The Redemptioners; The Germans As Pioneers; The Germans In The Revolution; and The Rear Guard Of The Revolution. This interesting work also contains a chronological table showing the arrival of German settlers and other highlights of German-American history from 1683 through 1783, an extensive bibliography, a map identifying German settlements, and an original index of names and subjects.
