Many of the more important of the books listed on the following pages were purchased at the suggestion of General Hawkins, as specimens of the work of these men in whom he was so keenly interested. As they are now housed within a few hundred feet of his Memorial to Mrs. Hawkins, it seemed desirable to provide students of the history of printing with the titles of all the early printed books which can be seen in the libraries at Providence.
