Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight for the Republic in China This volume tells everything that the student or the casual reader needs to know about the Chinese Question. It is sufficiently exhaustive to show very clearly the new forces at work, and to bring some realisation of the great gulf which separates the thinking classes of to-day from the men of a few years ago; whilst, at the same time, it is sufficiently condensed not to overwhelm the reader with too great a multitude of facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s mid-twentieth-century wars pose extraordinary interpretive challenges. The issue is not just that the Chinese fought for such a long time—from the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 until the close of the Korean War in 1953—across such vast territory. As Hans van de Ven explains, the greatest puzzles lie in understanding China’s simultaneous external and internal wars. Much is at stake, politically, in how this story is told. Today in its official history and public commemorations, the People’s Republic asserts Chinese unity against Japan during World War II. But this overwrites the era’s stark divisions between Communists and Nationalists, increasingly erasing the civil war from memory. Van de Ven argues that the war with Japan, the civil war, and its aftermath were in fact of a piece—a singular process of conflict and political change. Reintegrating the Communist uprising with the Sino-Japanese War, he shows how the Communists took advantage of wartime to increase their appeal, how fissures between the Nationalists and Communists affected anti-Japanese resistance, and how the fractious coalition fostered conditions for revolution. In the process, the Chinese invented an influential paradigm of war, wherein the Clausewitzian model of total war between well-defined interstate enemies gave way to murky campaigns of national liberation involving diverse domestic and outside belligerents. This history disappears when the realities of China’s mid-century conflicts are stripped from public view. China at War recovers them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from China Revolutionized All these questions presented themselves when the re formers startled the world with the announcement that there was to be a republic in China. Lit was to be a republic - not a monarchy said even those Chinese who had been educated in Japan, where lately a Japanese editor educated in America and ten pthers had been tried and executed in secret, the papers sealed, and the press censored. They wanted pitiless publicity in the new republican China. Had there been no abatement of the Opium habit through Amer ica's leadership of sentiment, and Britain's sacrifice of rev enue from 1909 to 1911, there could have been no rebellion in 1911. The reform cleared the befogged heads of the nation, added a million men to agitation, and furnished a hundred million dollars directly and indirectly toward the independence Of the agitators. How great a stone America and Britain set rolling in that Opium Conference of 1909 at Shanghai! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Revolution, 1911-1912: A Historical and Political Record of the Civil War When the Revolution broke out, I was residing in Hankow. Throughout the war I remained in Hankow, leaving this centre for Shanghai during the days when the Peace Conference was held in that city. I am a personal friend of the leader of the Revolution, General Li Yuan Hung, and, by virtue of having all the time been in possession of much exclusive information from behind the political curtain, am probably equipped to write of the main doings of the Revolution in that area where its effects were most marked. On the very eve of the Revolution, a book written by myself was published simultaneously in England and America, which contains some strangely prophetic utterances, and will give the reader who has not made Chinese politics a study a general idea of the condition of the country when the Revolution made the scales drop from the eyes of her teeming millions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About China and Japan The present volume carries the writer's studies regarding the problem of the Far East one step further. It has been written primarily to allow the ordinary reader to see at a glance what the position really is today in Eastern Asia, and to explain precisely why there should be conflict between China and Japan. The essential point - which the writer first insisted upon at great length in 'the Fight for the Republic in China' - is that Japan has a double policy, one policy for the East and another for the West; that she uses military power and secret loans to advance the first, and diplomacy and publicity the second; and that this intricate matter can be understood only by exploring the history of the remote past. The writer's thanks are due to the publishers of the magazine Asia for permission to reprint these essays in book-form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of China The eyes of the world are more and more turned toward China. We are coming to be profoundly interested in the fate of that greatest of Asiatic peoples. And it is well that we are. No other existing nation can look back over as long a past of continuous development as can China. When the foundations of Greece and Rome were being laid and when the great Hebrew prophets were in the midst of their ministry, a nation was being shaped and a civilization formed which have come down through the centuries with a comparatively unbroken history. There have been changes, but none of them as violent as those which have shaken the West during the same period. Only two other cultural groups - that in India and that in the Mediterranean Basin - have had as dominant an influence over as large a section of mankind.
