Book excerpt: ""The 5th Highland Light Infantry was originally known as the 19th Lanark Rifle Volunteers, one of the Volunteer units raised in 1859. In 1880, it became the 5th Lanark Volunteers. The connection with the Highland Light Infantry began in 1887, when it was named the 1st Volunteer Battalion Highland Light Infantry, a detachment of which served in the South African War. On the formation of the Territorial Force in 1909, the present name was adopted. The old history of the unit is contained in the Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force 1859-1908, by the late Lieut.-General J.M. Grierson, C.V.O., C.B., C.M.G. This book deals with our record of service in the war 1914-1918, and we feel we need only say three things in the Preface: 1. The book is published privately for those who served with us and others interested. 2. It has been written by officers of the Battalion who were with us during the period of which they write. 3. It is written to the memory of our gallant comrades who fell and who themselves did so much to make this History."" This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

Book excerpt: The title page notes that this history has been approved as an Official Record by the Committee of Imperial Defence (Historical Section, Military Branch) and that adds to the pedigree of what is undoubtedly a very good battalion history. The Battalion was raised in Glasgow on 2nd September 1914 as the 2nd Glasgow by the Lord Provost and City with many recruits from the Glasgow Boys Brigade. In May 1915 the Battalion moved to Prees Heath, in Shropshire, where it joined the 97th Brigade of the 32nd Division and sailed for France in November 1915. It served with that brigade on the Somme, on the Ancre and on the Flanders coast. In February 1918 it became the divisional Pioneer Battalion. There is useful information in the appendices: the Roll of Honour (36 officers and 795 dead), Honours and Awards, roll of officers and of other ranks who embarked for France with the Battalion on 23rd November 1915, and a list of officers who served with the Battalion overseas (135). This history is based on the contributions of many who served with the Battalion and the editor has drawn them together to provide a stirring account. The battalion suffered grievously during the first day of the Somme when the 32nd Division attacked Thiepval, and when 16th HLI came out of the line on the evening of July 3rd its casualties totalled 20 officers and 534 other ranks. The chapter describing this is titled The Shambles of the Somme. And they were there again at the final battle at the Ancre in November when their casualties amounted to 13 officers and 390 other ranks. The 16th HLI was with the Army of Occupation. It was a good battalion and this history does them credit.

Book excerpt: Simon Joness graphic history of underground warfare during the Great War uses personal reminiscences to convey the danger and suspense of this unconventional form of conflict. He describes how the underground soldiers of the opposing armies engaged in a ruthless fight for supremacy, covers the tunneling methods they employed, and shows the increasingly lethal tactics they developed during the war in which military mining reached its apotheosis. He concentrates on the struggle for ascendancy by the British tunneling companies on the Western Front. But his wide-ranging study also tells the story of the little known but fascinating subterranean battles fought in the French sectors of the Western Front and between the Austrians and the Italians in the Alps which have never been described before in English. Vivid personal testimony is combined with a lucid account of the technical challenges and ever-present perils of tunneling in order to give an all-round insight into the extraordinary experience of this underground war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardens of Hell examines the human side of one of the great tragedies of modern warfare, the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War. In February 1915, beginning with a naval attack on Turkey in the Dardanelles, a combined force of British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, and French troops invaded the Gallipoli Peninsula only to face crushing losses and an ignominious retreat from what seemed a hopeless mission. Both sides in the battle suffered huge casualties, with a combined 127,000 servicemen killed during the action. Patrick Gariepy has pieced together the battle from combatantsÆ own words. Drawn from diaries and letters and from stories passed down through generations of families, these firsthand accounts offer an honest, heartfelt, and sometimes painful testimony to a doomed campaign fought by the men who lived through the fury, terror, and grief that was Gallipoli. Gardens of Hell is a sensitive acknowledgment of the enormous human cost of military folly and failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palestine campaign of 1917 saw Britain's armed forces rise from defeat to achieve stunning victory. After two failed attempts in the spring, at the end of the year they broke through the Ottoman line with an innovative mixture of old and new technology and tactics, and managed to advance over 50 miles, from Gaza to Jerusalem, in only two months. As well as discussions of military strategy, Stuart Hadaway's gripping narrative of the campaign gives a broad account of the men on both sides who lived and fought in the harsh desert conditions of Palestine, facing not only brave and determined enemies, but also the environment itself: heat, disease and an ever-present thirst. Involving Ottoman, ANZAC, British and Arab forces, the campaign saw great empires manoeuvring for the coveted Holy Land. It was Britain's victory in 1917, however, that redrew the maps of the Middle East and shaped the political climate for the century to come.
