Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Alexis de Tocqueville’s influential work on the Old Regime and the French Revolution, royal centralisation had so weakened the feudal power of the nobles that their remaining privileges became glaringly intolerable to commoners. This book challenges the theory by showing that when Louis XVI convened assemblies of landowners in the late 1770s and 1780s to discuss policies needed to resolve the budgetary crisis, he faced widespread opposition from lords and office holders. These elites regarded the assemblies as a challenge to their hereditary power over commoners. The king’s government comprised seigneurial jurisdictions and venal offices. Lordships and offices upheld inequality on behalf of the nobility and bred the discontent motivating the people to make the French Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. Feudalism is normally associated with eighteenth-century France only in its more bizarre survivals, as in The Marriage of Figaro, when his seigneur claims the rights to spend the first night with the bride. If feudalism menat no more in the eighteenth century than a few quaint customs that could tickle an audence at the Comedie Francaise, why did French writers attack it so furiously? The author suggests that contemporary writers saw remnants of the feudal regime as important less in themselves, than as symbols of an attitude of mind which the 'enlightened' among them would no longer tolerate. Instead of representing the ideas of the eighteenth century through the eyes of a few outstanding writers, Dr Mackrell has tried to reconstitute the intellectual climate of the ancien regime from the works of largely unknown historians, jurists, economists and others. In this way he illuminates the rich texture of eighteenth-century French thought, without which the ideas of Voltaire, Montesquieu and even Rousseau lose much of their meaning. This study breathes life into the fierce controversies that shook the Age of Reason long before the outbreak of Revolution.

The reality behind how these entities have operated within set governmental systems has not always been as glamorous as these tales, but it retains an allure of its own nonetheless. This book provides a firm grounding in the historic political, social, and economic implications of rule by monarchy, including the prevalence of the feudal system in medieval Europe. Modern monarchies and the role of the aristocracy in every age are also detailed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Feudal Regime This account of the feudal regime forms the first chapter in the second volume of the Histoire Generale du IV Siecle a nos Jours, edited by MM. Lavisse and Rambaud. It is now done into English, with the idea that as a short description of the social organization prevailing in Europe from the tenth to the thirteenth century it may approve itself as widely among us as it has in France. It is hoped not only that it may be useful as collateral reading for classes in history, for which it seems peculiarly fitted, but also that it may be of interest to general readers. If it meets with sufficient favor, it is purposed to issue similar monographs on other subjects. Now and then, a note of no special importance has been dropped; a passage has been rendered rather freely; or an explanation, enclosed in brackets, has been added by the editor. Often, also, the paragraphing has been modified, out of respect for English usage. Otherwise, however, the original is unchanged in the translation. The editor is deeply indebted to Mr. Christian Gauss, of Lehigh University, for extensive aid in the translating, and also to his colleague, Mr. Victor Francois. He relieves them, though, of all responsibility for errors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
