Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was nineteenth-century British philanthropy the "truest and noblest woman’s work" and praiseworthy for having raised the nation’s moral tone, or was it a dangerous mission likely to cause the defeminization of its practitioners as they became "public persons"? In Victorian England, women’s participation in volunteer work seemed to be a natural extension of their domestic role, but like many other assumptions about gender roles, the connection between charitable and domestic work is the result of specific historical factors and cultural representations. Proponents of women as charitable workers encouraged philanthropy as being ideal work for a woman, while opponents feared the practice was destined to lead to overly ambitious and manly behavior. In The Angel out of the House Dorice Williams Elliott examines the ways in which novels and other texts that portrayed women performing charitable acts helped to make the inclusion of philanthropic work in the domestic sphere seem natural and obvious. And although many scholars have dismissed women’s volunteer endeavors as merely patriarchal collusion, Elliott argues that the conjunction of novelistic and philanthropic discourse in the works of women writers—among them George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, Hannah More and Anna Jameson—was crucial to the redefinition of gender roles and class relations. In a fascinating study of how literary works contribute to cultural and historical change, Elliott’s exploration of philanthropic discourse in nineteenth-century literature demonstrates just how essential that forum was in changing accepted definitions of women and social relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Text and Emotions investigates the functions, values and effects of emotions in literature and the arts, fostering the affective turn in textual theory and analysis. Fifteen essays on various art works analyse how modern fiction, drama, theatre, poetry and film, as well as Greek tragedy, succeed in both expressing and suggesting a vast and nuanced array of emotions while provoking affective responses in readers and spectators. The volume focuses on the exemplary way in which literature and the arts act upon our minds and have a strong impact on our understanding of aesthetic, political and moral values, challenging, shaping and transforming culture. The volume also intends to show how seminal writers and works have anticipated contemporary theories of emotions and can contribute to their growth. Linking formal, aesthetic and cultural-studies approaches, and combining the latest developments in the affective sciences with the close reading of texts, the volume puts forward a new direction for the study of literature, arts, media and culture.
Book Synopsis Repeated Measures Design with Generalized Linear Mixed Models for Randomized Controlled Trials by : Toshiro Tango
Download or read book Repeated Measures Design with Generalized Linear Mixed Models for Randomized Controlled Trials written by Toshiro Tango and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repeated Measures Design with Generalized Linear Mixed Models for Randomized Controlled Trials is the first book focused on the application of generalized linear mixed models and its related models in the statistical design and analysis of repeated measures from randomized controlled trials. The author introduces a new repeated measures design called S:T design combined with mixed models as a practical and useful framework of parallel group RCT design because of easy handling of missing data and sample size reduction. The book emphasizes practical, rather than theoretical, aspects of statistical analyses and the interpretation of results. It includes chapters in which the author describes some old-fashioned analysis designs that have been in the literature and compares the results with those obtained from the corresponding mixed models. The book will be of interest to biostatisticians, researchers, and graduate students in the medical and health sciences who are involved in clinical trials.
