Book Synopsis Virgin Martyrs by : Karen A. Winstead
Download or read book Virgin Martyrs written by Karen A. Winstead and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the torture and execution of beautiful Christian women first appeared in late antiquity and proliferated during the early Middle Ages. A thousand years later, virgin martyrs were still the most popular female saints. Their legends, in countless retellings through the centuries, preserved a standard plot—the heroine resists a pagan suitor, endures cruelties inflicted by her rejected lover or outraged family, works miracles, and dies for Christ. That sequence was embellished by incidents emblematic of the specific saint: Juliana's battle with the devil, Barbara's immurement in the tower, Katherine's encounter with spiked wheels. Karen A. Winstead examines this seemingly static story form and discovers subtle shifts in the representation of the virgin martyrs, as their legends were adapted for changing audiences in late medieval England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition at Boston College's McMullen Museum of Art (February-May 1999) takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying the style, subject matter, and functions of religious art in Italy between 1580-1680. The conceptual centerpiece of the exhibition is Caravaggio's recently rediscovered The Taking of Christ. The catalogue reproduces in color all of the paintings in the exhibition and includes a collection of essays that analyze how some of the period's most important artistic, religious, and social concerns are encapsulated within the various images. Contributors include Franco Mormando (Exhibition Organizer and Catalogue Editor), Gauvin Bailey, Noel Barber, Sergio Benedetti, Pamela Jones, John W. O'Malley, John Varriano, Josephine von Henneberg, and Thomas Worcester.

Book excerpt: Featuring illuminated manuscripts from nineteen Boston-area institutions, Beyond Words provides a sweeping overview of the history of the book in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as a guide to its production, illumination, functions, and readership. With over 150 manuscripts on display, Manuscripts for Pleasure & Piety at the McMullen Museum focuses on lay readership and the place of books in medieval society. Book excerpt: The Temple of Glas takes the form of an elusive and suspenseful-but for that reason all the more sensational-dream vision that demands close attention to detail and the dynamic way in which the meaning of events unfolds. Seducing readers with possibilities remains what the poem does best, and that special magnetism speaks not only to the provenance and textual history of Lydgate's text but also to its literary qualities.

Book Synopsis The Reign of James VI by : Julian Goodare
Download or read book The Reign of James VI written by Julian Goodare and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2000-01-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of James VI (1567–1625) remains one of the most enigmatic in Scottish history. There are long periods within it that resemble black holes in our knowledge. This study is a concerted attempt by a group of ten scholars of the reign, drawn from three different disciplines, to shed light on its politics and government, viewed through various perspectives. These include the royal court, which is analysed through its literature, architecture and ceremony; noble factionalism; relations with England; a revised model of tensions between church and state; and the relationship between the government and the Highlands, the Borders and the south west, a future region of opposition to Charles I. This study also analyses James as a literary author, correspondent, husband and 'universal king'. The book offers alternatives to accepted views of the reign, dismissing both Melvillianism and 'laissez faire monarchy' as useful tools. It sees the centre of politics as the interaction between an expanded and increasingly expensive royal court and a phenomenal growth of the state, based on a huge increase in legislation and the business of the Privy Council.

Book Synopsis Drawings for Book Illustration by : David P. Becker
Download or read book Drawings for Book Illustration written by David P. Becker and published by Houghton Library. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the production of illustrated books, the artist's drawing is but a preliminary step; the actual printing is often--though not always--carried off by other hands. Taking as its scope the full breadth of printed book illustration from the 16th to the 20th century, Drawings for Book Illustration documents the influence exerted by such artists as Peter Paul Rubens, Eugene Delacroix, and Alexander Calder on both the aesthetics of the book and the technologies of the press. With thorough descriptions of the lives and works of the artists, and illustrated with sumptious duotone renderings of both preliminary sketches and finished printed designs, Becker's catalogue is a handy guide to this fundamental aspect of the history of the graphic arts.

Book excerpt: PC-Aided Numerical Heat Transfer and Convective Flow is intended as a graduate course textbook for Mechanical and Chemical Engineering students as well as a reference book for practitioners interested in analytical and numerical treatments in the subject. The book is written so that the reader can use the enclosed diskette, with the aid of a personal computer, to systematically learn both analytical and numerical approaches associated with fluid flow and heat transfer without resorting to complex mathematical treatments. This is the first book that not only describes solution methodologies but also provides complete programs ranging from SOLODE to SAINTS for integration of Navier-Stokes equation. The book covers boundary layer flows to fully elliptic flows, laminar flows to turbulent flows, and free convection to forced convection. The student will learn about convection in porous media, a new field of rapid growth in contemporary heat transfer research. A basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer is assumed. It is also assumed that the student knows the basics of Fortran and has access to a personal computer. The material can be presented in a one-semester course or with selective coverage in a seminar.
