Book excerpt: A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.

Book excerpt: A large number of high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steels have been developed, and most have been marketed under proprietary names. Frequently, a steel of given composition will have several different proprietary names, or tradenames, depending upon the steel company that produced it. Thus, there are several hundred proprietary names for the large number of HSLA steels now available. For promotional purposes, different types of higher strength constructional steels have been denoted as weathering steels, microalloyed steels, controlled-rolled steels, acicular-ferrite steels, high-formability steels, and so on, the terms describing some characteristic of the type of steel or its processing. However, all hot-rolled steels of these various types are high-strength, low-alloy steels, and they are the subject of this report, which describes the development of HSLA steels, the physical metallurgy of the strengthening processes used, the characteristics of the steels, and their use.

Book excerpt: Welding and Joining of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS): The Automotive Industry discusses the ways advanced high strength steels (AHSS) are key to weight reduction in sectors such as automotive engineering. It includes a discussion on how welding can alter the microstructure in the heat affected zone, producing either excessive hardening or softening, and how these local changes create potential weaknesses that can lead to failure. This text reviews the range of welding and other joining technologies for AHSS and how they can be best used to maximize the potential of AHSS. Reviews the properties and manufacturing techniques of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) Examines welding processes, performance, and fatigue in AHSS Focuses on AHSS welding and joining within the automotive industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two low alloy steels, heat treated to yield strengths approximating 175,000 and 150,000 psi, were fatigue tested under rotating beam conditions at temperatures of 70, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 F. The fatigue data is related to the tensile properties at various test temperatures. Temper embrittlement, occurring during the course of fatigue testing and its effect on the fatigue properties, is also demonstrated. For the steels investigated, the elevated temperature tensile properties appear to be good predictors of elevated temperature fatigue behavior. However, the occurrence of a subcritical temperature phenomenon to which the specific steel is susceptible (such as temper embrittlement) will affect the fatigue behavior and destroy its fatigue-tensile relationship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume organizes information by alloy so that pertinent data can be found easily. Physical and mechanical properties from room temperature to temperatures in excess of 100 C are shown graphically or in tabular form. All data is thoroughly referenced. Now high-temperature property data can be found in one complete reference! Over 200 alloys are organized by AISI number into 11 major sections: Irons, Carbon Steels, Alloy Steels, ASTM Steels, Low Alloy Constructional Steels, Ultra High Strength Steels, Tool Steels, Maraging Steels, Wrought Stainless Steels, Heat Resistant Casting Alloys, and Wrought Iron-Nickel Alloys and Iron-Nickel Superalloys. Each alloy record lists the designation, specifications, UNS number composition product forms and a comment on the high-temperature properties and applications. Data is then given for physical properties such as density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, electrical conductivity. Poisons ratio, moduli of elasticity and rigidity, etc. Mechanical properties follow, and include tensile properties, shearing and bearing properties, impact properties, creep, stress rupture and stress relaxation, and fatigue properties. The last part of the alloy record gives other effects of temperature, such as hot hardness, corrosion, and growth.
