Book excerpt: Tests were conducted on sheet specimens of two materials, Ti-8A1-1Mo-1V and AM350 CRT to determine the fatigue lives, rates of fatigue-crack propagation, and residual static strengths at three temperatures, 550 deg F, -110 deg F, and room temperature. The effects of prior exposure to 550 deg F for up to 10,000 hours on the same properties were also studied. Neither material was significantly degraded by the elevated temperature soak. The fatigue characteristics were found to be comparable to those of contemporary aluminum alloys.

Book excerpt: To obtain comparative fatigue test data on three sheet materials selected for possible use on supersonic transports, a multi-phase program of tests was carried out using speciments of duplex annealed 8-1-1 titanium, PH14-8 Mo (SRH 1050) stainless steel and Inco 718 alloy in the 20% cold rolled and aged condition. Unnotched, centernotched, fusion-welded and spotwelded specimens were used. Constant load amplitude (S-N) fatigue tests were conducted at room temperature, 400 and 650 F on specimens having no prior exposure and on specimens with prior exposure to a constant load at 400 or 650 F for 100, 1000 or 5000 hours. An evaluation was also made of the effect of applying contaminants during S-N testing at 550 and 650 F to specimens having no prior exposure and to specimens exposed to load and contaminant at 550 F for 1000 hours.

Book excerpt: National Aeronautics and Space Administration has conducted tests to determine the mechanical properties of materials suitable for use in a supersonics transport over the temperature range of interest and after prolonged exposure to temperature. On the basis of studies on fatigue behavior, rate of fatigue crack propagation, residual static strength, and resistance to deterioration of properties due to prolonged exposure to temperature, no serious materials problems are anticipated. However, stress corrosion is found to be a potentially serious problem in titanium alloys in a hot salt environment and in stainless steels in an ambient environment. The-Ti-8A1-lMo-lV alloy is found to be generally superior to other contending materials in all respects studied except for salt stress corrosion in which respect it was poorer than all others. Further research is recommended on stress corrosion; on the combined effects of fatigue, thermal exposure, and creep; and on the development of structural configurations and fabrication procedures suitable for the supersonic transport.

Book excerpt: Static and constant load amplitude fatigue test data were generated for 0.050 in. 8-1-1 titanium (duplex-annealed), 0.025 in PH14-8Mo (SRH 1050), and 0.025 in. INCO 718 (20% cold rolled and aged at 1275 F). Plain, center notched, and fusion welded specimens were tested at room temperature, 400 and 650 F. Specimens with no prior exposure, and specimens with prior exposure to a constant stress at 400 or 650 F for 100, 1000, or 5000 hours were tested. The constant stress during exposure of the titanium specimens was 25,000 psi and the corresponding stress for the steel and nickel base alloys was 40,000 psi. For convenience in the use of this basic information, the static and fatigue test data, plots of static strengths and elongation versus test temperature, S-N curves for test stress range ratios of R = 0.1 and R = - 0.5, and S-N diagrams derived from the curves are presented.
