Book excerpt: The recent technological advances in environmental monitoring coupled with the increasingly stringent effluent requirements being placed on waste treatment systems makes it vital to have a more complete understanding of how specific compounds in waste streams can impact wastewater treatment processes. Since activated sludge processes are recognized as one of the most often applied technologies in wastewater treatment, this study assesses the impacts of select toxic synthetic organic compounds (SOCs) on the activated sludge communities in two types of wastewater treatment reactors: a completely-mixed activated sludge reactor (CMAS) and a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Commonly applied activated sludge monitoring parameters, such as solids analysis and substrate removal, are collected and correlated to the results of microscopic image analysis (IA) and direct gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to monitor the response of the activated sludge communities to variations in operational conditions, including the incorporation of SOCs in the influent feed and varying the solids retention time. The results of this research indicate that the response of the activated community is highly dependent on the reactor configuration. The CMAS settling performance was more strongly correlated to the shape parameters, and the SBR settling performance was more strongly correlated to the size parameters, which is qualitatively supported by particle settling theory when considering that SBR flocs were found to be larger than the CMAS flocs. The SBR began to exhibit larger floc sizes and had a higher sludge volume index with the incorporation of SOCs, while the CMAS flocs became more spherical after SOCs were incorporated and exhibited more discrete settling. The molecular analysis results revealed that the community structure within the activated sludge system was transient in response to environmental variations. Banding patterns indicated that samples were more similar to other samples taken from the same reactor under the same operational conditions. Thus, as operational conditions were varied, sample banding patterns would also change, indicating transitions in the genetic composition, and ultimately the dominant species present, in response to environmental changes.

Book excerpt: This research effort focused on evaluating the toxicity of the saline waste water generated from washing of Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) deicing trucks and to study the feasibility of discharging it into wastewater treatment plants. Performance of activated sludge treating wastewater under varying levels of salt concentration was studied by measuring the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), activated sludge oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and Turbidity. Another component of the study was to examine the fate and chemistry of ferric ferro/ferri cyanide, an anti-caking complex that is added to deicing salt. Although, the complex form of cyanide is harmless, in the presence of sunlight it can dissociate to form free cyanide that is highly toxic. Deicing salts collected from INDOT’s West Lafayette and Lafayette Facilities were tested for total and amenable cyanide levels. Lafayette road salt had high levels of cyanide that could lead to violation of pretreatment standards on cyanide, if this salt wash water is discharged to wastewater treatment plant. Respirometry was used for the impact assessment of variable salt concentrations on the biological performance of a low strength activated sludge samples for a POTW using a static liquid – gas flow (GFS) respirometer with salt concentrations varying from 0 – 10% . Generally, positive effect in oxygen uptake rate (OUR) was noticed on low salt concentrations up to 2% and a sharp decrease thereafter. A salt concentration of 6% resulted in a 50% decrease in respiration rate of the tested activated sludge. Further studies should involve the effect of saline shock loads in the specific ammonia uptake rate (SAUR) and specific nitrate uptake rate (SNUR) in addition to the final effluent quality.

Book excerpt: In the past, industrial wastewater treatment primarily focused on the removal of BOD and suspended solids. In recent years, however, the focus has changed to aquatic toxicity, priority pollutants, and volatile organics. This required changes in how we design and operate biological treatment plants. Many existing plants must be retrofitted. New approaches to meet new requirements are discussed in detail. The authors, with a combined experience of sixty years, have presented case studies for a wide variety of industrial wastewaters including pulp and paper, food processing, chemical and pharmaceuticals, and textile wastewaters. Data interpretation and process design are developed through the use of seventeen examples. Procedures for the laboratory and pilot plant generation of process design data are presented. Emphasis is placed on meeting the many new regulations governing industrial wastewater discharges.

Book excerpt: In the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act in 1987, the U.S. EPA specifically addressed toxics management. In addition to the requirement to eliminate discharge of toxics, there can be a requirement to conduct a toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE). The scope of toxicity reduction varies from the very simple and inexpensive to the highly complex and costly. This book, volume three of the Water Quality Management Library, provides a complete overview of toxicity reduction evaluation. The book presents the testing and removal of toxicants, toxicity testing procedures, sampling techniques, baseline collection data, and source identification. Plus, the book presents toxicity reduction methodologies including unit processes necessary for organic toxicant control using biological and physical chemical methodologies as well as selected unit processes necessary for inorganic toxicant control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activated sludge systems are commonly used to remove organic matter and nutrients from wastewater. They are also used to remove synthetic organic compounds from industrial activities. In this study, two identical activated sludge-based continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) were employed to study the biodegradation of melamine and 4-nitrophenol and their impact on wastewater effluent water quality and microbial structure and functions. Two CSTRs at steady-state conditions were fed with two synthetic organic nitrogen compounds, melamine and p-nitrophenol (PNP) for 12 hours on day 136 and 150, respectively, of an extended test. Melamine, although toxic to human and animals, presented no detrimental effect on bioreactor performance and it appeared to act as an inert soluble substance in the activated sludge system. After the shock loading, melamine was quickly washed out of the continuous flow system. Batch degradation studies confirmed that the activated sludge from the CSTR was not capable of degrading melamine. The other chemical p-nitrophenol (PNP), however, showed significant toxicity towards the activated sludge, although subpeaks of possible PNP degradation metabolites were detected by high performance liquid chromatography indicating that the PNP could be partially degradable by the activated sludge. After 12-h shock loading of PNP, significant inhibition of nitrification and bacterial activity by PNP resulted in a prolonged period (> 22 days) of deterioration of effluent water quality. The results indicate that the fate and toxicity of synthetic organic nitrogen compounds can be quite different in activated sludge systems, although both melamine and PNP increased total nitrogen concentrations in wastewater effluent.
