Book excerpt: This paper will describe the crew station of the Navy/Marine Corps' newest high performance tactical jet aircraft - the F/A-18 HORNET and the Human Factors effort involved in its development and testing. The F/A-18 represents the first of a new generation of military aircraft; as such, its development posed a host of novel man machine interface, crew station design and human factors engineering problems in need of creative solutions. Compared to other tactical jet aircraft currently serving the military, the F/A-18 is, by design, the most mission flexible and growth accommodating aircraft in the inventory. In order to develop the HORNET, major changes in the human factors engineering approach were required. Popular description of the airplane as being out of Star Wars, tend to distort the aircraft's orderly development history. Involved were: thorough mission analyses, technology risk assessment and a step-by-step process of proof (and refinement) or concept in realistic mission simulators.
