Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the surface, Riverview High School looks like the post-racial ideal. Serving an enviably affluent, diverse, and liberal district, the school is well-funded, its teachers are well-trained, and many of its students are high achieving. Yet Riverview has not escaped the same unrelenting question that plagues schools throughout America: why is it that even when all of the circumstances seem right, black and Latino students continue to lag behind their peers? Through five years' worth of interviews and data-gathering at Riverview, John Diamond and Amanda Lewis have created a rich and disturbing portrait of the achievement gap that persists more than fifty years after the formal dismantling of segregation. As students progress from elementary school to middle school to high school, their level of academic achievement increasingly tracks along racial lines, with white and Asian students maintaining higher GPAs and standardized testing scores, taking more advanced classes, and attaining better college admission results than their black and Latino counterparts. Most research to date has focused on the role of poverty, family stability, and other external influences in explaining poor performance at school, especially in urban contexts. Diamond and Lewis instead situate their research in a suburban school, and look at what factors within the school itself could be causing the disparity. Most crucially, they challenge many common explanations of the 'racial achievement gap,' exploring what race actually means in this situation, and why it matters. An in-depth study with far-reaching consequences, Despite the Best Intentions revolutionizes our understanding of both the knotty problem of academic disparities and the larger question of the color line in American society.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of CLARA’S HEART and CLOUDLAND comes a rich, literary mystery based and united by two real events that occurred at Middlebury College; the disappearance of a student during winter break; and the vandalism of the Robert Frost Homestead located on one of the outer campuses. Luc Flanders has just finished playing a game of pond hockey with his college roommates when he realizes he has lost something precious and goes back to the ice to find it. He never returns, and the police department in Middlebury, Vermont are divided in their assessment of what may have happened to him. Some feel that Flanders left on his own accord and is deliberately out of touch. Others, including detectives Nick Jenkins and Helen Kennedy, suspect that harm may have come to him. As the search for Luc Flanders widens and intensifies, suspicions about several different people, including his Middlebury College roommates and ex-girlfriend arise. Unfortunately, Sam Solomon an older man with whom Luc has been having a secret relationship, cannot prove his whereabouts during the hours when the younger man may have disappeared and Solomon, too, comes under suspicion. As Luke Flanders disappears, the Robert Frost house near the Middlebury campus is vandalized. And there seems to be a link between the two events that the police are determined to discover. Alternating points of view between Luc Flanders Sam Solomon, Luc’s mother and detective Nick Jenkins, BLACK DIAMOND FALL races to a disturbing and astonishing conclusion in a lush, literary mystery that could only come from the mind of acclaimed author Joseph Olshan.

The primary catalyst for both trends is, in my judgment, the Supreme Court of the United States... Our challenge... in this next millennium will be to...restore the American experiment as understood by George Washington, James Madison, and Abraham Lincoln." - Federal Judge Bill Pryor "Vindicate us Lord, and plead our cause against an ungodly nation. Get justice for us from our adversaries. Deliver us from deceitful and unjust men. Cause them to fall into the pit that they have dug for the righteous. Grant to Your servants that we may speak Your word in all boldness. Give us the nations for our inheritance, and the ends of the earth for our possession."

Book excerpt: God used the lives of His Old Testament servants to advance history toward His planned revelation of His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As He did, He also provided a written record for us to study and use as warnings, exhortations, and boundaries for our own lives. Although our circumstances have changed since ancient biblical times, the people represented in them still look much the same as you and I! This study provides women with a unique approach to learning and applying God's principles for daily living, by examining some of the key lessons that are to be seen from the lives of many Old Testament characters. As we see their attributes and flaws, and study how God interacted with them, we can appreciate how His own standards of holiness are never compromised, although His guidance is tempered with great love and mercy. Join Cindy Lasiter in this seventeen-week study, which can be used for personal study or dynamic group discussion. You too will gain great hope and direction as you see how even God's most incredible servants in the Bible were, at best, diamonds in the rough! Author's Cover Bio Cindy Lasiter has taught God's Word to children, youth, and women for many years. She was a class administrator and women's discussion leader for Bible Study Fellowship International, as well as the director of women's ministry for her church. She currently teaches a Bible study for women at RockPointe Church in Flower Mound, Texas. Her greatest desire is to teach women how to apply God's Word to their lives in order to know Him better and live out His plan and purpose on earth.
