In contemporary critical theory, specifically in the thought of Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt, the answer has been posed in terms of immaterial labor and a new mode of “informatized production.” Though this project is not meant as a total critique of Negri and Hardt’s work, it is meant as a particular critical intervention: one proposing that their understanding of this new, “informatized” process of valorization functions via a reified understanding of information. In positing information as always-already complete, value-rich pieces of wealth, Negri, Hardt, and perhaps others of the Autonomist tradition are rendered unable to provide an adequate account of the exploitation of living labor (instead offering only the strange hypothesis that “informational accumulation” immediately appropriates what amounts to fixed capital in the form of information-products). So instead we begin with Gilbert Simondon’s innovative understanding of information. Following his methodological maxim, that “the notion of form must be replaced by that of information,” we analyze information as a productive process of psychosocial individuation wherein the psyche, the collective, and the epistemic are constituted in the same movement (rather than analyzing the form of informatized production, wherein information appears as a fully-constituted collection of facts). This account of information-as-production provides a base to study the exploitation of psychosocial individuation, where the living labor of information-power, our basic human capacity to in-form, is employed to produce the very schemas that subject us.

Gilbert Simondon (1924–1989), one of the most influential contemporary French philosophers, published only three works: L'individu et sa genèse physico-biologique (The individual and its physico-biological genesis, 1964) and L'individuation psychique et collective (Psychic and collective individuation, 1989), both drawn from his doctoral thesis, and Du mode d'existence des objets techniques (On the mode of existence of technical objects, 1958). It is this last work that brought Simondon into the public eye; as a consequence, he has been considered a “thinker of technics” and cited often in pedagogical reports on teaching technology. Yet Simondon was a philosopher whose ambitions lay in an in-depth renewal of ontology as a process of individuation—that is, how individuals come into being, persist, and transform. In this accessible yet rigorous introduction to Simondon's work, Muriel Combes helps to bridge the gap between Simondon's account of technics and his philosophy of individuation. Some thinkers have found inspiration in Simondon's philosophy of individuation, notably Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Combes's account, first published in French in 1999, is one of the only studies of Simondon to appear in English. Pathologically dependent patients, for Coen, are identified not by surface character traits, but by their response to the intrapsychic demands of analysis. Such patients remain in treatment, sometimes contentedly, sometimes amid rebukes and complaints, but they do not profit from it. Their inability to use insight, especially in the transference, is matched by a proclivity for sadomasochistic enmeshment. In analysis, this tendency translates into a continuing dependent attachment to the analyst. In exploring the genetic roots of pathological dependency, Coen ranges beyond extant trauma theories in describing a pattern of parent-child interaction in which repetitive behavioral enactments substitute for the acceptance and resolution of conflicts, both intrapsychic and interpersonal. In analysis, pathologically dependent patients use the analyst as they have come to use significant others throughout their lives: as part of a defensive structure characterized by repetitive enactments and a refusal to face what is wrong with them. This "misuse of others" is infused with destructiveness, hostility, and rage, and the analyst necessarily becomes the object of these powerful emotions. With such patients, then, the road to therapeutic progress invariably passes through the analysis of mutual transferential and countertransferential hate, the patient's tempting invitations to collusion and avoidance notwithstanding.
