Book excerpt: Abstract: Black Women Head Coaches-There is a disparity between the number of Black female basketball student-athletes (51%) and Black women head coaches (11.4%) of women's Division I basketball (Lapchick, 2OlOa). Sagas and Cunningham (2004) suggested the population of Black coaches should be statistically similar to the population of Black athletes. This study was conducted to examine the experience of Black women coaching women's Division I basketball. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the experiences of Black women Division I head coaches (N = 8). The study produced data which were analyzed using the constant comparative method, and open, axial, and selective coding. The researcher found that the participants did not aspire to become a head coach. Multiple forms of discrimination exist in intercollegiate athletics for Black women attempting to obtain a head coaching position and while coaching. Black women head coaches tend to pay special attention to the Black student-athletes off the court. Black female assistant coaches are expected to relate to the Black female student-athletes. There are a wide range of strategies that could help to increase the number of Black women coaching such as giving back and mentoring.

Book excerpt: In NCAA Division I women's basketball, the majority of student-athletes are Black (i.e., 51%); however, Black women make up only a small percentage of the total number of coaches at this level (i.e., 26%; NCAA, 2016). Although these discrepancies have recently been recognized in sport studies literature (Borland & Bruening, 2010; LaVoi & Dutove, 2012), sport psychology researchers have yet to explore the underlying structural and psychological issues that lead to the underrepresentation of Black female coaches in NCAA Division I women's basketball. To this end, narrative inquiry (Smith & Sparkes, 2009) was utilized in the current study to explore the stories of eight NCAA Division I women's basketball assistant coaches who identify as Black women. . During face-to-face interviews, participants described the roles they are asked to fill and the ways they cope with the multiple oppressions they experience as Black women in coaching. Themes that arose throughout a thematic analysis of these narratives (Braun & Clark, 2006) include: (a) Pregame: Learning to coach (b) First half: Experiences from the first 10 years; (c) Second half: Experiences from the last five years; and (d) Overtime: Thinking about the future. It is hoped that these findings will lead to the development of interventions that can empower NCAA Division I Black female coaches as well as challenge current structural ideologies that disadvantage Black female coaches in this context. Further, creating a more inclusive environment at NCAA Division I institutions could enhance the experiences and coaching career aspirations of Black female student-athletes by allowing them to see empowered Black female role models in coaching. Implications for sport psychology consultants working within NCAA Division I women's basketball, who are well positioned to contribute to these efforts, are also discussed.

Active and systemic discrimination, along with institutionalized racism and bias, are essential factors in this dissertation and continue to be central issues in the hiring practices within NCAA men's basketball head coaching and continue to be challenges for African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches along with certain aspects of this current society hiring practices along with other aspects of this society. While highlighting racial inequalities in hiring practices and retention rates for African American NCAA men's head basketball coaches. The research discussed the history of African Americans' relationship with basketball from a player and coaching perspective. The research also discussed how African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches identify, measure, and track success and maintain high-performance levels within the team and for themselves. Finally, the research intended to contribute to the existing knowledge and assist current and prospective coaches, universities, and the NCAA in hiring and retention policies and procedures for all head basketball coaches. Purposive sampling was used to interview 12 successful African American NCAA Division I men's head basketball coaches. The research findings and the accompanying literature suggested that several best practices are needed to become a successful African American head basketball coach at the collegiate level.

The original plan for this thesis was to seek answers to the questions why it is so difficult to coach millennials and what are the factors that make the millennial generation so different? The interviews I conducted with well-respected, tenured college basketball head coaches from across the country made that topic grow into so much more! This collection of coaches represents a broad cross-section of the profession, and their personal accounts of their careers offer insight on many topics. Though each coach has his or her own distinctive coaching style and team culture, there are common threads that run through each of their stories. Foremost is the fact that although they are all aware that the metric by which their athletic administration measures their success is their win-loss records, not one coach mentions a given number of wins as a goal. Rather, they all recognize that their prime directive is to effect growth in each of their players at a crucial time in their young lives. This growth is in the areas of leadership, cooperation, communication, and self-awareness. Each of the coaches expresses a desire to lead their student-athletes to understand and experience the joy and satisfaction of being a part of something bigger than themselves. As a byproduct, these interviews serves to reaffirm my decision to make coaching my life's work.
