He explains that he was attacked shortly after interviewing a friend of one of the victims and warned to discontinue his investigation. A remark of one of his assailants appeared to confirm that the murders were committed with a common motive and, as his client is clearly unable to proceed, Holmes agrees to assume the case. The duo call upon Miss Daisy Scanlon, the young woman visited by Mr Endicott before he was injured, who was distressed but of some assistance. Returning to Baker Street, it is not long before a message from her arrives requesting a further meeting. Holmes realises at once that the appointment is a trap, but they set out to see what can be learned after ensuring that they are armed. They narrowly escape with their lives, immediately revisiting Miss Scanlon to discover that she has suffered a fatal accident in her home. Although it is not apparent, Holmes deduces that she has been murdered. Consulting the extensive notes left by his client, Holmes then conducts a series of interviews. These lead him to believe that the murders are linked to The Experience Club, an establishment barred to all except gentlemen who have performed extraordinary feats. There he recognises agents of Imperial Germany, and eventually uncovers a plot to assassinate the Queen. It transpires that German agents have abducted a Member of Parliament, in order to gain information, and also his daughter as an incentive to gain his co-operation. Holmes knows, despite discouragement from Scotland Yard and his brother Mycroft, that these incidents also must be addressed, to prevent a blow to our country that would devastate the Empire.

Book excerpt: To understand how the investment environment has evolved over recent months in Mexico, our team conducted a year-long, on-the-ground research operation that included interviews with over 150 business leaders and officials defining trends across every major sector of the economy. It is an election year in Mexico, meaning the often turbulent Obrador administration is drawing to a close. In contrast with the nervousness and uncertainty we witnessed ahead of his inauguration, our team notes a particular sense of ease around the upcoming elections as CEOs and investors are more familiarized with Morena, the party founded by the incumbent president. Overall, 2024 is expected to see an unusual general continuity of business during an election year thanks to the fact that both of the main presidential candidates are not expected to announce disruptive macroeconomic policies. Through this 220-page publication, featuring interviews with top business leaders from every major sector of the economy, as well as a range of articles and analysis, we present a comprehensive snapshot of the Mexican economy and the investment environment at this crucial period.

Book excerpt: A compelling portrait of rock's greatest guitarist at the moment of his ascendance, Stone Free is the first book to focus exclusively on the happiest and most productive period of Jimi Hendrix's life. As it begins in the fall of 1966, he's an under-sung, under-accomplished sideman struggling to survive in New York City. Nine months later, he's the toast of Swinging London, a fashion icon, and the brightest star to step off the stage at the Monterey International Pop Festival. This momentum-building, day-by-day account of this extraordinary transformation offers new details into Jimi's personality, relationships, songwriting, guitar innovations, studio sessions, and record releases. It explores the social changes sweeping the U.K., Hendrix's role in the dawning of "flower power," and the prejudice he faced while fronting the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In addition to featuring the voices of Jimi, his bandmates, and other eyewitnesses, Stone Free draws extensively from contemporary accounts published in English- and foreign-language newspapers and music magazines. This celebratory account is a must-read for Hendrix fans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing the clubs in the context of twentieth-century middle-class culture, Charles maintains that they represented the response of locally oriented, traditional middle-class men to societal changes. The groups emerged at a time when service was becoming both a middle-class and a business ideal. As voluntary associations, they represented a shift in organizing rationale, from fraternalism to service. The clubs and their ideology of service were welcome as a unifying force at a time when small cities and towns were beset by economic and population pressures.
