Book Synopsis The Executioner's Men by : George W. Grayson
Download or read book The Executioner's Men written by George W. Grayson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Zetas represent a new generation of ruthless, sadistic pragmatists in Mexico and Central America who are impelling a tectonic shift among drug trafficking organizations in the Americas. Mexico's marines have taken down the cartel's top leaders; nevertheless, these capos and their desperados have forever altered how criminal business is conducted in the Western Hemisphere. This narrative brings an unprecedented level of detail in describing how Los Zetas became Mexico's most diabolical criminal organization before suffering severe losses. In their heyday, Los Zetas controlled networks of American police, politicians, judges, and businessmen. The Mexican government is losing its "war on drugs," despite the military, technical, and intelligence resources provided by its northern neighbor. Subcontracted street gangs operate in hundreds of US cities, purchasing weapons, delivering product, executing targeted foes, and bribing the US Border Patrol. Despite crippling losses Los Zetas still dominate Nuevo Laredo, the major portal for legal and illegal bilateral commerce. They also work hand-in-glove with the underworld in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, as well as with gangs like the Maras Salvatruchas.
Book Synopsis The Executioner's Toll, 2010 by : Matthew T. Mangino
Download or read book The Executioner's Toll, 2010 written by Matthew T. Mangino and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Executioner's Toll, 2010 is a meticulous examination of every execution (and the details surrounding the execution) carried out in a single year--and a thought-provoking exploration into the minds of 46 killers as each plays the role of predator, quarry and condemned. The unsettling narratives begin with a murder on May 26, 1993, and end with an execution on December 16, 2010. The book chronicles 63 murders, 44 trials, countless appeals, two suicide attempts, 41 last meals, 33 final statements and 46 executions. The Executioner's Toll, 2010 could have covered any year in the modern era of the death penalty, but had to cover one complete year, in order to provide a true picture of the death penalty, executions and the anguish of victims. This book presents the compelling stories, accounts often neglected in the mainstream media. Every person facing the executioner has a story, every killing is as unique as it is devastating.
Book Synopsis The Executioner's Journal by : Frantz Schmidt
Download or read book The Executioner's Journal written by Frantz Schmidt and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a career lasting nearly half a century, Meister Frantz Schmidt (1554-1634) personally put to death 392 individuals and tortured, flogged, or disfigured hundreds more. The remarkable number of victims, as well as the officially sanctioned context in which they suffered at Schmidt’s hands, was the story of Joel Harrington’s much-discussed book The Faithful Executioner. The foundation of that celebrated work was Schmidt's own journal--notable not only for the shocking story it told but, in an age when people rarely kept diaries, for its mere existence. Available now in Harrington’s new translation, this fascinating document provides the modern reader with a rare firsthand perspective on the thoughts and experiences of an executioner who routinely carried out acts of state brutality yet remained a revered member of the local community, widely respected for his piety, steadfastness, and popular healing. Based on a long-lost manuscript thought to be the most faithful to the original journal, this modern English translation is fully annotated and includes an introduction providing historical context as well as a biographical portrait of Schmidt himself. The executioner appears to us not as the frightening brute we might expect but as a surprisingly thoughtful, complex person with a unique voice, and in these pages his world emerges as vivid and unforgettable. That was enough to ignite fourteen years of agony and destruction. It's 2034 and America's flame is flickering, about to burn out. The heart of a great country had been laid bare; chest ripped apart like open-heart surgery. A well-armed militia planned the final take-down. What had Simpson said? Book Synopsis Death Penalty: A Punishment or Problem by : Dr Ashutosh Mishra
Download or read book Death Penalty: A Punishment or Problem written by Dr Ashutosh Mishra and published by Namya Press. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death penalty, otherwise called capital punishment, is an administration authorised practice whereby the State executes an individual as a punishment for a crime. The sentence requesting that somebody is penalised in such a way is alluded to as a death sentence, though the demonstration of such a sentence is known as an execution. A prisoner who has been sentenced to death and is anticipating execution is alluded to as condemned, and is said in certain nations to be on "death row". Violations that are deserving of death are known as capital crimes, capital offences or capital felonies, and changes according to jurisdiction, yet in most of the circumstances involve heinous attacks, for example, murder, mass homicide, aggravated cases of rape, child assault, child sexual abuse, terrorism, treason, espionage, sedition, offences against the State, for example, endeavouring to overthrow the government, airplane hijacking, drug dealing, and drug possession, violations against humanity and slaughter, and sometimes, the cruelest act of recidivism and exasperated robbery. Deterrence is presumably the most generally communicated reason for the death penalty. The pith of the theory is that the danger of being executed later on will be adequate to make a critical number of individuals avoid from committing an appalling crime they had in any case planned. Deterrence isn't mainly worried about the anticipation of further killing by a previously convicted death penalty defendant. That falls under the subject of incapacitation. Retentionists of Capital Punishment believe that capital punishment is essential to preserve stability in the world because it serves as a deterrent to potential offenders. In the beginning, public opinion was still in favour of capital punishment rather than life imprisonment. The objective of this research article is to find out whether death penalty is a problem or a punishment for society.
Book Synopsis The Molecular Biology of Cancer by : Stella Pelengaris
Download or read book The Molecular Biology of Cancer written by Stella Pelengaris and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Molecular Biology of Cancer, Stella Pelengaris & Michael Khan This capturing, comprehensive text, extensively revised and updated for its second edition, provides a detailed overview of the molecular mechanisms underpinning the development of cancer and its treatment. “Bench to Bedside”: A key strength of this book that sets it apart from general cancer biology references is the interweaving of all aspects of cancer biology from the causes, development and diagnosis through to the treatment and care of cancer patients – essential for providing a broader view of cancer and its impact. The highly readable presentation of a complex field, written by an international panel of researchers, specialists and practitioners, would provide an excellent text for graduate and undergraduate courses in the biology of cancer, medical students and qualified practitioners in the field preparing for higher exams, and for researchers and teachers in the field. For the teaching of cancer biology, special features have been included to facilitate this use: bullet points at the beginning of each chapter explaining key concepts and controversial areas; each chapter builds on concepts learned in previous chapters, with a list of key outstanding questions remaining in the field, suggestions for further reading, and questions for student review. All chapters contain text boxes that provide additional and relevant information. Key highlights are listed below: An overview of the cancer cell and important new concepts. Selected human cancers: lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, renal, skin, cervix, and hematological malignancies. Key cellular processes in cancer biology including (a) traditionally important areas such as cell cycle control, growth regulation, oncogenes and tumour suppressors apoptosis, as well as (b) more highly topical areas of apoptosis, telomeres, DNA damage and repair, cell adhesion, angiogenesis, immunity, epigenetics, and the proteasome. Clinical oncology: In-depth coverage of important concepts such as screening, risk of cancer and prevention, diagnoses, managing cancer patients from start to palliative care and end-of-life pathways. Chapters highlighting the direct links between cancer research and clinical applications. New coverage on how cancer drugs are actually used in specific cancer patients, and how therapies are developed and tested. Systems Biology and cutting edge research areas covered such as RNA interference (RNAi). Each chapter includes key points, chapter summaries, text boxes, and topical references for added comprehension and review. Quotations have been used in each chapter to introduce basic concepts in an entertaining way. Supported by a dedicated website at www.blackwellpublishing.com/pelengaris We should list the great reviews we got for first edition which are on the back of the 2nd edition: “A capturing, comprehensive, clearly written and absolutely accurate introduction into cancer biology.....This book deserves great praise for the readable presentation of this complex field....the true synthesis of bench and bedside approaches is marvelously achieved.” Christian Schmidt, Molecular Cell “Chapters address the issues of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient care and set the book apart from general molecular biology references....This book is applicable to both graduate and undergraduate students, and in the context of a research laboratory, this book would be an excellent resource as a reference guide for scientists at all levels.” V.Emuss, Institute of Cancer Research, London. Also, from the first edition: “Pelengaris, Khan, and the contributing authors are to be applauded. The Molecular Biology of Cancer is a comprehensive and readable presentation of the many faces of cancer from molecular mechanisms to clinical therapies and diagnostics. This book will be welcomed by neophyte students, established scientists in other fields, and curious physicians.” -Dean Felsher, Stanford University
Book Synopsis Executioner's Current by : Richard Moran
Download or read book Executioner's Current written by Richard Moran and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "fascinating and provocative" story (The Washington Post) of high stakes competition between two titans that shows how the electric chair developed through an effort by one nineteenth-century electric company to discredit the other. In 1882, Thomas Edison ushered in the “age of electricity” when he illuminated Manhattan’s Pearl Street with his direct current (DC) system. Six years later, George Westinghouse lit up Buffalo with his less expensive alternating current (AC). The two men quickly became locked in a fierce rivalry, made all the more complicated by a novel new application for their product: the electric chair. When Edison set out to persuade the state of New York to use Westinghouse’s current to execute condemned criminals, Westinghouse fought back in court, attempting to stop the first electrocution and keep AC from becoming the “executioner’s current.” In this meticulously researched account of the ensuing legal battle and the horribly botched first execution, Moran raises disturbing questions not only about electrocution, but about about our society’s tendency to rely on new technologies to answer moral questions.

Book Synopsis Executions and the British Experience from the 17th to the 20th Century by : William B. Thesing
Download or read book Executions and the British Experience from the 17th to the 20th Century written by William B. Thesing and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the trial and execution of King Charles I of England in 1649 to the reading of A.E. Houseman's poems by Clarence Darrow in a Chicago murder trial in 1924, writers have registered their opinions and impressions of both public and private forms of execution. This collection of ten essays examines in detail the literary responses of various writers to the social issue of capital punishment during this four-century span.Several of the essays focus on one or two writers in particular--Henry Fielding and Samuel Johnson, for example. Others cover several writers or genres or apply insights from other disciplines (psychology, history, sociology) to make larger points about punishment, crime and crowd behavior. All of the essays seek to illuminate--by referring to the British experience in the past--what continues to be a controversial issue in United States society.
