Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Excavations at Cyrene, First Campaign, 1910-1911: Preliminary Reports When the irade for the excavation of Cyrene was granted, in May, 1910, I at once went out to look over the country more carefully than had been possible on my previous trips. An ao count of this journey has already been printed, l and monthly reports were prepared and submitted, describing the progress of the work from October, 1910, to May, 1911. In the fol lowing pages I shall give a resume of the year's results and suggest what we hope to accomplish the coming season. The reports by the other members of the staff will deal in greater detail with certain aspects of the work. It is possible that their views and mine may not coincide, though, as we are working together in the closest sense, I do not foresee any serious divergencies of opinion. Whether there are or not, my companions will enjoy the same freedom and Opportunities for expressing their views that I have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology’s links to international relations are well known: launching and sustaining international expeditions requires the honed diplomatic skills of ambassadors. U.S. foreign policy depends on archaeologists to foster mutual understanding, mend fences, and build bridges. This book explores how international partnerships inherent in archaeological legal instruments and policies, especially involvement with major U.S. museums, contribute to the underlying principles of U.S. cultural diplomacy. Archaeology forms a critical part of the U.S. State Department’s diplomatic toolkit. Many, if not all, current U.S.-sponsored and directed archaeological projects operate within U.S. diplomatic agendas. U.S. Cultural Diplomacy and Archaeology is the first book to evaluate museums and their roles in presenting the past at national and international levels, contextualizing the practical and diplomatic processes of archaeological research within the realm of cultural heritage. Drawing from analyses and discussion of several U.S. governmental agencies’ treatment of international cultural heritage and its funding, the history of diplomacy-entangled research centers abroad, and the necessity of archaeologists' involvement in diplomatic processes, this seminal work has implications for the fields of cultural heritage, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, international relations, law, and policy studies.
