The following pages will endeavor to show that there are as many "ifs" in Nature as in the Evolution of Spiritual Man, and that these "ifs" have a mutual correspondence. This little monosyllable is a very important word. It is the indispensable link between cause and effect; it connects the engine with the train. Nature would be nothing without it, neither would the Spiritual World. It is a conspicuous word in the Bible. "If ye keep my commandments," is the emphatic statement of Jesus. The "if" in Nature connects a personal and immanent God, as the origin of all Life, with all that follows. The most unwilling minds are obliged to acknowledge that link. The same is true in the Spiritual World. Given a supernatural Cause, the effects as revealed in the Bible and confirmed in human experience are no more varied than in Nature. The levels and lifts in the latter are duplicated in the former; the closeness of this identity will be shown later on. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Evolution and the Bible The earliest followers of Christ, as the latest, have been impelled to concede that he was of a higher spiritual order than they, yet our logic often fails to convince because we have stressed the physical rather than the spiritual aspect of his birth and death, and have not grasped the laws of spiritual growth it was his mission to reveal. The Holy Ghost is spirit and does not conceive flesh, since that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Christ's spirit came from the Father and returned to the Father. The Bible nowhere states that a mortal life fol lows the same direct course. Christ said No man hath ascended up to Heaven but He that came down from Heaven. Ye are from beneath, I am from above: ye are of this world, I am not of this world. To His disciples He said: Whither I go ye can not come now but ye shall follow me after ward. And John the Baptist testified of Him: He that cometh from above is above all for God giveth not the spirit by measure unto Him. The spirit of God then is given to men by measure, as likewise im plied by Christ's statement that the law and the prophets were until John, since then the kingdom of God is preached and every man presseth into it. Book excerpt: In our current era of holy terror, passionate faith has come to seem like a present danger. Writers such as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens have been happy to throw the baby out with the bathwater and declare that the danger is in religion itself. God, Hitchens writes, is not great. But man, according to George E. Vaillant, M.D., is great. In Spiritual Evolution, Dr. Vaillant lays out a brilliant defense not of organized religion but of man’s inherent spirituality. Our spirituality, he shows, resides in our uniquely human brain design and in our innate capacity for emotions like love, hope, joy, forgiveness, and compassion, which are selected for by evolution and located in a different part of the brain than dogmatic religious belief. Evolution has made us spiritual creatures over time, he argues, and we are destined to become even more so. Spiritual Evolution makes the scientific case for spirituality as a positive force in human evolution, and he predicts for our species an even more loving future. Vaillant traces this positive force in three different kinds of “evolution”: the natural selection of genes over millennia, of course, but also the cultural evolution within recorded history of ideas about the value of human life, and the development of spirituality within the lifetime of each individual. For thirty-five years, Dr. Vaillant directed Harvard’s famous longitudinal study of adult development, which has followed hundreds of men over seven decades of life. The study has yielded important insights into human spirituality, and Dr. Vaillant has drawn on these and on a range of psychological research, behavioral studies, and neuroscience, and on history, anecdote, and quotation to produce a book that is at once a work of scientific argument and a lyrical meditation on what it means to be human. Spiritual Evolution is a life’s work, and it will restore our belief in faith as an essential human striving.

It has been repeatedly asserted that I reject the Incarnation or the Divinity of Christ. This is false.viii evolution OF man and christianity. I accept the Catholic doctrine of the Incarnation as set forth in our Second Article of Religion. As more fully explained in the chapter on Miracles, the birth and char acter of our Lord are two distinct questions, and one may accept His divinity even if he believe that He had an earthly father - Joseph. Further: One may believe Ilis birth to have been truly miraculous - that is, the result of a special operation of the Divine Will - and yet hold that this birth occurred along the lines of natural generation. In other words, the divinity of Christ depends upon the essential relation of the hu man and divine spiritual elements in Him, not upon the mode of His birth. He may have been born in the ordinary way, while His (human) spirit was specially begotten of God the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, working through the media of a man and woman. At any rate, I believe that in Christ dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (col., ii, which influx of Deity into Humanity was due to a special operation of God's Will acting along the line of ordinary generation. It has also been asserted that I reject the resurrection of Christ. I do attach little importance to the details of His bodily resurrection as given in the Gospels, because I consider these documents of too uncertain authorship to allow of attaching much importance to their details but I accept the resurrection or manifestation of Christ after death in a spiritual body, as spoken of by St. Paul in First Corinthians, xv; and this is the doctrine of the Episcopal Church, as set forth in her burial service. Book excerpt: For more than seventy years, The Spiritual Man, Watchman Nee's classic on spiritual growth, has helped believers advance in their pursuit of gaining Christ by showing them the way to let the Lord fully gain them. According to Nee, "The most frustrating experience of believers today is that in seeking for progress in the spiritual path, they do not find the proper way. As a result, they grope in darkness, being at times high or low, lingering around the crossroads year in and year out, and having no one to consult for direction. The author of this book was such a one. For this reason, the book emphasizes clear guidance on the proper path. Every chapter of this book is for the purpose of directing the believers on the right course. Therefore, all those who seek after God with an honest heart can go step by step accordingly. Almost every chapter begins from the position of the sinner and goes on step by step toward the peak of spiritual life." This electronic book is the third of three volumes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Man: His Religious Systems, and Ethics We may safely say, without fear of contradiction, that one of the most remarkable discoveries of the nineteenth century has been the "law of evolution," so satisfactorily demonstrated, and now universally accepted as true by the scientific world - i.e. by all who have taken the trouble and are able to investigate the subject, unbiassed by preconceived opinion or prejudice. Not only for this will the century be celebrated, but also for the extraordinary development of science; for the progress of education and knowledge generally; and for the emancipation of science from the slavery of the Church, by which it has itself become an independent power, and a source of knowledge to the people. During the greater part of fifteen centuries science was held in bondage by ecclesiasticism, and its development prevented. It was compelled to teach certain ideas of the universe and its order, because in accordance with those found in the Bible - a, compilation of anonymous writings, held as true, not on indisputable evidence, but simply on faith. These ideas, which so long prevailed and for attempts to deny which men suffered and died - are now recognised as legendary and false.
