Download or read book The Evolution of an English Town written by Gordon Home and published by . This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Pickering reproduces the 1999 hardback and has taken the opportunity to bring the town's story from its beginnings down to 2009.Gordon Home (1878 - 1969) was a prolific author, journalist and artist and was the Art Editor of the 'Tatler' magazine. His well-received 'Yorkshire Coast and Moorland Scenes' of 1904 led him to Pickering to write its history. He wrote 'The Evolution of an English Town: Pickering' in 1905 and the book quickly became established as a model for other local history books. The book was reproduced in hardback in 1999 by the Blackthorn Press with the addition of a further chapter on Pickering's history in the twentieth century by local historian, John Rushton. Gordon Home went on to write travel books about Britain, France and Italy and after service as a Major in France and Africa in the First World War, he took up archaeology and architectural history. He was editor for Dent's Cathedral Series and published historical and topographical works, illustrated with his own paintings.John Rushton studied at University College and the London School of Economics. He came to Ryedale as tutor organiser for the Workers' Educational Association in 1959 and developed local studies throughout the District. He was active in the foundation of the Beck Isle Museum in Pickering and in recent years he has lectured for the WEA and Hull University. He was awarded the MBE in 2005 for 'services to the community'. Other books for the Blackthorn Press include 'Yorkshire in the Reign of Elizabeth I' and 'The History of Ryedale' with others in preparation. This history of Pickering reproduces the 1999 hardback and has taken the opportunity to bring the town's story down to 2009.

Book Synopsis The Paleoanthropology and Archaeology of Big-Game Hunting by : John D. Speth

This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception, paleoanthropology has been closely wedded to the idea that big-game hunting by our hominin ancestors arose, first and foremost, as a means for acquiring energy and vital nutrients. This assumption has rarely been questioned, and seems intuitively obvious—meat is a nutrient-rich food with the ideal array of amino acids, and big animals provide meat in large, convenient packages. Through new research, the author of this volume provides a strong argument that the primary goals of big-game hunting were actually social and political—increasing hunter’s prestige and standing—and that the nutritional component was just an added bonus. Through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary research approach, the author examines the historical and current perceptions of protein as an important nutrient source, the biological impact of a high-protein diet and the evidence of this in the archaeological record, and provides a compelling reexamination of this long-held conclusion. This volume will be of interest to researchers in Archaeology, Evolutionary Biology, and Paleoanthropology, particularly those studying diet and nutrition.

Book Synopsis Fire as an Agent in Human Culture by : Walter Hough
Download or read book Fire as an Agent in Human Culture written by Walter Hough and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work undertakes the presentation of salient features of an encyclopedic subject in a more or less condensed fashion. The importance of the study of heating and illumination is thought to be its contribution to the history of culture as connected with the inventiveness displayed by man in the adaptation of the primary natural key force nearest to his needs in all the earlier stages of progress. The history also suggests the intellectual, esthetic, and religious reactions marking the several stages of culture gradually attained by man.
