Nearly forty speakers from around the world reported on their specialist fields. More than six hundred participants from almost 50 countries heard lectures on topics of high relevance to those working along the value chain of cement and concrete. In times of an about-turn in energy policy, sustainability, energy efficiency and the use of natural resources were again key topics, as well as technical advancement in grinding and burning technology. An outlook on future developments in the global cement and energy markets and research reports on new cements completed the congress programme. Even if the global economy is still facing enormous challenges and the economic growth of the emerging countries has slowed down, cement remains a building material without which modern society could not function. Technological progress and the predicted increase in global demand for cement are the basis for the future growth of our industry. The VDZ Congress 2013 has once again illustrated how cement producers and users, researchers and equipment suppliers can work together to successfully master the challenges our industry faces.

Book excerpt: Cement production is an energy intensive industrial process that requires heat to be supplied at high temperature levels under the constraints of gas-solid heat exchange phenomena and the kinetics of chemical reactions. In this paper, the use of Pinch Analysis and Process Integration techniques to optimize the energy efficiency of the cement production will be explored. The aim is to use process modeling to characterize cooling and heating requirements of the process, focusing on the gas-solid heat exchanges while including waste fuel utilization. The heat cascade model is adapted to account for gas-solid and gas-gas heat recovery used to calculate the heat recovery in the process. A mixed integer linear programming problem is solved to calculate the integration of the available heat; this model optimizes the heat recovery and the energy conversion efficiency considering different fuels, heat recovery options and process operating conditions.

Book excerpt: The cement industry is a building block of modern society, and currently responsible for around 7% of global and 4% of EU CO2 emissions. While facing global competition and a challenging business environment, the EU cement sector needs to decarbonise its production processes to comply with the EU's ambitious 2030 and 2050 climate targets. This report provides a snapshot of the current cement production landscape and discusses future technologies that are being explored by the sector to decarbonise its processes, describing the transformational change the industry faces. This report compiles the current projects and announcements to deploy breakthrough technologies, which do require high capital investments. However, with 2050 just one investment cycle away, the sector needs to commercialise new low-CO2 technologies this decade to avoid the risk of stranded assets. As Portland cement production is highly CO2-intensive and EU plants are already operating close to optimum efficiency, the industry appears to be focussing on carbon capture storage and utilisation technologies - while breakthroughs in alternative chemistries are still being explored - to reduce emissions. While the EU has played an important role in supporting early stage R&D for these technologies, it is now striving to fill the funding gap for the commercialisation of breakthrough technologies. The recent momentum towards CO2-free cement provides the EU with the opportunity to be a frontrunner in creating markets for green cement.
