Book Synopsis Women in Executive Power by : Gretchen Bauer
Download or read book Women in Executive Power written by Gretchen Bauer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Executive Power studies the participation of women in the political executive around the world—notably in cabinet positions as ministers and sub-ministers and as heads of government and state. Providing multiple case studies in each chapter, the book provides regional overviews of nine different world regions covering those with the fewest to the most women in executive power. Evaluating the role of socio-cultural, economic and political variables of women’s access to cabinet positions and positions of head of state and government, the book shows that women are increasingly moving into positions previously considered ‘male’. Tracing the historical trends of women’s participation in governments that has markedly increased in the last two decades, the book assesses the factors that have contributed to women’s increasing presence in executives and the extent to which women executives, once in office, represent women’s interests. With case studies from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, the Arab world and Oceania, Women in Executive Power will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, gender and women's studies.

Book Synopsis The New Politics of Regionalism by : Ulf Engel
Download or read book The New Politics of Regionalism written by Ulf Engel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume approaches regionalism as one potential pattern in a changing global order. Since the end of the Cold War, different forms of territorialization have emerged and we are confronted with an increasing number and variety of actors that are establishing regional projects. This volume offers an innovative contribution to the study of this new complexity by exploring constellations of regional actors, spatial scales and imaginations beyond state-centred perspectives as well as on multiple, often overlapping levels. The chapters analyse the emergence, trajectories and outcomes of regionalisms from the perspective of the Global South, specifically concentrating on regional projects in Latin America and Africa, but also in the Asia-Pacific. They attempt to identify the specific conditions and junctures of different forms of region-making in their external (global) and internal (local/national) dimensions. The volume also places special emphasis on interactions, spatial entanglements and comparisons between regionalisms in different parts of the world. By expanding beyond the perspective of North-South transfers, this book seeks to better understand the dynamics and diversity of interregional interactions. This volume will appeal to scholars of global studies, international political economy, international relations, human geography, and development studies, as well as area studies specialists who focus on Latin America and Africa.
Book Synopsis The Ironies of Citizenship by : Thomas Janoski
Download or read book The Ironies of Citizenship written by Thomas Janoski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explanations of naturalization and jus soli citizenship have relied on cultural, convergence, racialization, or capture theories, and they tend to be strongly affected by the literature on immigration. This study of naturalization breaks with the usual immigration theories and proposes an approach over centuries and decades toward explaining naturalization rates. First, it provides consistent evidence to support the long-term existence of colonizer, settler, non-colonizer, and Nordic nationality regime types that frame naturalization over centuries. Second it shows how left and green parties, along with an index of nationality laws, explain the lion's share of variation in naturalization rates. The text makes these theoretical claims believable by using the most extensive data set to date on naturalization rates that include jus soli births. It analyzes this data with a combination of carefully designed case studies comparing two to four countries within and between regime types.
