Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many electronic and acoustic signals can be modelled as sums of sinusoids and noise. However, the amplitudes, phases and frequencies of the sinusoids are often unknown and must be estimated in order to characterise the periodicity or near-periodicity of a signal and consequently to identify its source. This book presents and analyses several practical techniques used for such estimation. The problem of tracking slow frequency changes over time of a very noisy sinusoid is also considered. Rigorous analyses are presented via asymptotic or large sample theory, together with physical insight. The book focuses on achieving extremely accurate estimates when the signal to noise ratio is low but the sample size is large. Each chapter begins with a detailed overview, and many applications are given. Matlab code for the estimation techniques is also included. The book will thus serve as an excellent introduction and reference for researchers analysing such signals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical approach to estimating and tracking dynamic systems in real-worl applications Much of the literature on performing estimation for non-Gaussian systems is short on practical methodology, while Gaussian methods often lack a cohesive derivation. Bayesian Estimation and Tracking addresses the gap in the field on both accounts, providing readers with a comprehensive overview of methods for estimating both linear and nonlinear dynamic systems driven by Gaussian and non-Gaussian noices. Featuring a unified approach to Bayesian estimation and tracking, the book emphasizes the derivation of all tracking algorithms within a Bayesian framework and describes effective numerical methods for evaluating density-weighted integrals, including linear and nonlinear Kalman filters for Gaussian-weighted integrals and particle filters for non-Gaussian cases. The author first emphasizes detailed derivations from first principles of eeach estimation method and goes on to use illustrative and detailed step-by-step instructions for each method that makes coding of the tracking filter simple and easy to understand. Case studies are employed to showcase applications of the discussed topics. In addition, the book supplies block diagrams for each algorithm, allowing readers to develop their own MATLABĀ® toolbox of estimation methods. Bayesian Estimation and Tracking is an excellent book for courses on estimation and tracking methods at the graduate level. The book also serves as a valuable reference for research scientists, mathematicians, and engineers seeking a deeper understanding of the topics.

Book excerpt: The convergence properties of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm are interpreted in terms of a vector space associated with the coefficients of the adaptive linear prediction filter (ALPF). Signal planes defined in this weight vector space are used to describe the frequency tracking by characteristics of spectral estimators based on the ALPF and are used to explain the effects of both the filter parameters and the algorithm on tracking speed. The performances of three different adaptive frequency estimators derived from the ALPF are compared. Two of these employ Fourier transforms of the coefficients and the third is based on a transform of the ALPF output. Comparisons with the conventional periodogram spectrum estimator are presented in terms of a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) defined in frequency domain parameters. Specific calculations for one ALPF frequency estimator (The maximum entropy estimator) are used to demonstrate a bias in this estimator.

Book excerpt: This thesis considers how the position of a magnetic levitation train can be found non-optically using signal processing techniques. An overview of magnetic levitation trains is given, including an explanation of the necessity for non-optical position sensing. A least-squares with forgetting factor algorithm is derived, showing its convergence and stability. The input signal is manipulated so that the least-squares algorithm can be applied. Extremum seeking is introduced and utilized for phase estimation of the high frequency signal. When adding noise to the incoming signal, the frequency estimates remain accurate if the forgetting factor is allowed to vary proportional to the slope of the estimate. Additive noise has little effect on the extremum seeking phase estimate. The frequency and phase estimation is combined to reconstruct an estimate of the carrier signal to demodulate the signal and extract the position of the train.

Book excerpt: Linear signal spaces are of fundamental importance in signal and system theory, communication theory, and modern signal processing. This book proposes a time-frequency analysis of linear signal spaces that is based on two novel time-frequency representations called the `Wigner distribution of a linear signal space' and the `ambiguity function of a linear signal space'. Besides being a useful display and analysis tool, the Wigner distribution of a linear signal space allows the design of high-resolution time-frequency filtering methods. This book develops such methods and applies them to the enhancement, decomposition, estimation, and detection of noisy deterministic and stochastic signals. Formulation of the filtering (estimation, detection) methods in the time-frequency plane yields a direct interpretation of the effect of adding or deleting information, changing parameters, etc. In a sense, the prior information and the signal processing tasks are brought to life in the time-frequency plane. The ambiguity function of a linear signal space, on the other hand, is closely related to a novel maximum-likelihood multipulse estimator of the range and Doppler shift of a slowly fluctuating point target - an estimation problem that is important in radar and sonar. Specifically, the ambiguity function of a linear signal space is relevant to the problem of optimally designing a set of radar pulses. The concepts and methods presented are amply illustrated by examples and pictures. Time-Frequency Analysis and Synthesis of Linear Signal Spaces: Time-Frequency Filters, Signal Detection and Estimation, and Range-Doppler Estimation is an excellent reference and may be used as a text for advanced courses covering the subject.
