Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of the Territory of Arizona, 1890 The efficiency of the Public School System has been well maintained during the past two years, and a general progress is noted. Universal desire in the community that a high standard shall be at tained has greatly assisted school officers in the discharge of their duties, and Legislative action has provided such a liberal minimum of taxation that as a rule funds are ample for a sufficiently long School term. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The San Antonio Public School System: A Survey Conducted by J. F. Bobbitt of the School of Education of the University of Chicago, January, 1915 Before entering upon findings and recommendations, I wish to anticipate two or three objections that are sure to arise upon the reading of my report. One is that things are often recom mended which are clearly impossible. It is quite true that many things are recommended that can not be accomplished suddenly. A ship sailing from Galveston for Australia can not arrive in one day, nor even in one week; but because it can not arrive suddenly is no reason why it should not set out. In one day it can be expected to cover only one day's journey, and in one week only one week's journey but it can rightly steer the first or any successive day's journey only as its far - distant destina tion is held in mind by captain and helmsman. And so it is with educational progress along most lines. The journey ahead of our profession by way of modernizing our labors, making them efficient, and making them serve twentieth century needs is yet along one. The various ends in view can usually be attained only after many years of continuous labors toward those ends. Next year's moderate progress can be rightly accomplished, how ever, .only as it keeps the more distant ends in view. Educational progress to be solid and substantial must generally be reasonably slow. This does not mean, however, that it should be blind; nor even that it should be near-sighted, looking only to those things that can be quickly and easily reached. There is nothing in man's world that should be more far-seeing than education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Arizona As every one knows, the real purpose of a preface to a history is to give the author an opportunity - quite casually, of course - to loss modest floral tributes at himself as he tells you not only what a Matchless Volume he has just written, but as well calls attention to the erudition employed by himself in going only to original sources for his information, and in so doing consulting freely the works of Confucius, Tatistchev and Sheherazade - all in their original tongues. If this is done with sufficient dash and elan, as the gentle reader holds the M. V. in her hands, tears of grief will gather in her left eye at the thought of all the people dead and gone who will never have the opportunity of reading the M. V., while in her right eye crystal drops of joy will listen over the feast of reason that will soon be hers. Now, as to our erudition as the author of The Story of Arizona, permit us to say that the languages employed by the early chroniclers of the Southwest were Spanish, Injun and Mediaeval Arizonese.
