Book Synopsis Women Music Educators in the United States by : Sondra Wieland Howe
Download or read book Women Music Educators in the United States written by Sondra Wieland Howe and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although women have been teaching and performing music for centuries, their stories are often missing from traditional accounts of the history of music education. In Women Music Educators in the United States: A History, Sondra Wieland Howe provides a comprehensive narrative of women teaching music in the United States from colonial days until the end of the twentieth century. Defining music education broadly to include home, community, and institutional settings, Howe draws on sources from musicology, the history of education, and social history to offer a new perspective on the topic. In colonial America, women sang in church choirs and taught their children at home. In the first half of the nineteenth century, women published hymns, taught in academies and rural schoolhouses, and held church positions. After the Civil War, women taught piano and voice, went to college, taught in public schools, and became involved in national music organizations. With the expansion of public schools in the first half of the twentieth century, women supervised public school music programs, published textbooks, and served as officers of national organizations. They taught in settlement houses and teacher-training institutions, developed music appreciation programs, and organized women’s symphony orchestras. After World War II, women continued their involvement in public school choral and instrumental music, developed new methodologies, conducted research, and published in academia. Howe’s study traces this evolution in the roles played by women educators in the American music education system, illuminating an area of research that has been ignored far too long. Women Music Educators in the United States: A History complements current histories of music education and supports undergraduate and graduate courses in the history of music, music education, American education, and women’s studies. It will interest not only musicologists, educational historians, and scholars of women’s studies, but music educators teaching in public and private schools and independent music teachers.

Book Synopsis Trends of Piano Class Instruction, 1815-1962 by : William Henry Richards
Download or read book Trends of Piano Class Instruction, 1815-1962 written by William Henry Richards and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pilot study seeks to determine the trends of the growth and development of piano class instruction. A popular belief is that group piano teaching originated about 1915. In 1929 leaders felt that the roots were embedded too deeply to be revealed. This study pushes back the frontiers more than one hundred years and analyzes progressively the trends. The trends were discovered from the history of group piano teaching. The earliest example, located in Dublin in 1815, provided a heritage of class teaching in the United States. Data proved there was group instruction in some "female schools" of the South in 1960. In 1890 the cornerstones of a philosophy were expressed. By 1915, classes were introduced into the public schools. In 1929 the demand soared. The trend has been one of continuous refinement, especially since 1930. The beginning piano class has been the most popular level. The number of student per groupe has gradually diminished from thirty in 1815 to six in 1962. Smaller groups insure more musicianly results. Intermediate and advanced classes existed sporadically from 1815 and have become more in demand since 1940. Enrollment has been limited to three or four students from 1890. During the twentieth century, when demand for piano class teachers exceeded availability, others were drafted into the movement--classroom and private piano teachers. Generally, their results proved inferior to those of trained piano class teachers. Throughout its history, class piano has received much adverse criticism. Close analysis reveals that such criticisms were generally incurred by an omission of at least one factor (see below). Teacher training existed in 1815. One hundred years later, music supervisors offered in-service training, emphasizing group procedures for private piano teachers and piano pedagogy for the classroom teachers. By 1929, group procedures were included in university piano courses. At present, a curious dichotomy lies in the fact that a number of universities offer classes as part of their piano program, but do not include group procedures in pedagogy courses. Probably these courses are taught by private piano teachers without group experience. The roles of student and teacher have had significant changes. The student has had the opportunity to act and react in a variety of roles since 1940: performer, listener, and contributor. Previously his capacity was more of performer and listener. As the role of the student altered, so did that of the teacher, a concomitant relationship. Necessarily the role of the teacher became that of a guide.
