Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric In this book the author has endeavored to present a clear and comprehensible discussion of the essentials of Rhetoric and English Composition, and to furnish the student with suitable constructive and critical exercises. The statement of rhetorical principles as set forth in the text and the exercises placed at the end of each chapter have been the outgrowth of nine years' experience in the teaching of high school and college students. The book is especially designed to furnish a practical course for pupils in the high school and for freshmen in college. Neither the text nor the exercises, it is believed, will be found too difficult for the high school student or too elementary for the average college freshman. Such a course of instruction as is embodied in this book should form part of the training of every young man and woman. In three respects this book is different from most other books on Composition and Rhetoric. First, it is written from the practical rather than the literary point of view. The author has constantly aimed to put himself in the place of the teacher, who must explain the principles of composition so clearly that the average student can understand them, and so convincingly that he cannot help seeing their practical value. The author has not imagined himself to be a literary man addressing a literary audience, nor has he taken it for granted that the students who use this book are going to produce literature. Book Synopsis Rhetoric and Composition by : Steven Lynn
Download or read book Rhetoric and Composition written by Steven Lynn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric and composition is an academic discipline that informs all other fields in teaching students how to communicate their ideas and construct their arguments. It has grown dramatically to become a cornerstone of many undergraduate courses and curricula, and it is a particularly dynamic field for scholarly research. This book offers an accessible introduction to teaching and studying rhetoric and composition. By combining the history of rhetoric, explorations of its underlying theories, and a survey of current research (with practical examples and advice), Steven Lynn offers a solid foundation for further study in the field. Readers will find useful information on how students have been taught to invent and organize materials, to express themselves correctly and effectively, and how the ancient study of memory and delivery illuminates discourse and pedagogy today. This concise book thus provides a starting point for learning about the discipline that engages writing, thinking, and argument.

Book Synopsis Composition and the Rhetoric of Science by : Michael J Zerbe
Download or read book Composition and the Rhetoric of Science written by Michael J Zerbe and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composition and the Rhetoric of Science: Engaging the Dominant Discourse calls for instructors of first-year writing courses to employ primary scientific discourse in their teaching and for rhetoricians of science to think about teaching scientific discourse as a literacy skill. Author Michael J. Zerbe argues that inclusion of scientific discourse is crucial because of this rhetoric’s status as the dominant discourse in western culture. The volume draws on Lyotard, Žižek, Foucault, and Althusser to argue that while important theorists such as these have recognized the dominance of scientific discourse, rhetoric and composition has not—to its detriment. The textillustrates that scientific discourse remains a miniscule part of the enterprise of rhetoric and composition and thus the field is not fulfilling its mission of providing students with the writing and reading skills they need to live and work in a science- and technology-dependent society. Zerbe provides an analysis of science popularizations and demonstrates how these works can be used to contextualize primary scientific research. He also presents three pedagogical scenarios, each built around a carefully chosen, accessible example of scientific discourse, that demonstrate how articles from scientific journals can be used in writing courses. Only by gaining a meaningful fluency in this discourse—one that is not offered by science textbooks—can a more sophisticated scientific literacy be assured. Composition and the Rhetoric of Science effectively explores the relatively limited amount of work done in rhetoric and composition on scientific discourse and questions this state of affairs. Zerbe presents for the first time cultural studies and science literacy as gateways for incorporating scientific discourse into first-year writing courses.

Download or read book Composition and Rhetoric (Classic Reprint) written by Charles Swain Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric The purpose of this book is to help the young student to write more clearly and more forcefully. Our aim is not to train writers in the finer graces Of language. That accomplishment depends upon the individual student and lies beyond our power. We shall be content if those who come to our book may receive a fresh desire to use with greater precision the simple English speech which is our priceless heritage. We have tried to keep this book free from the technical word and phrase, because we are persuaded that good Writing depends upon the simple essentials. Therefore, the main stress has been placed upon the word, sentence, and paragraph. Remembering, then, that the plastic mind of the young student is before us, with experiences and likings peculiar to him, we have tried to furnish that mind with clear and simple directions, with examples chosen from good writers, and exercises which will test the student's understanding of the principles of writing.
