Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new instrument for all sky, spectrophotometric imaging of aurora and airglow was installed in the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory's Airborne Ionospheric Observatory. Initial observations of equatorial and near-equatorial 6300 angstroms OI airglow show the existence of north-south aligned regions of airglow depletion. These dark bands often extend more than 1200 km in the north-south direction and 50 to 200 km in the east-west direction. Simultaneous airborne ionospheric soundings indicate that these regions of airglow depletion are characterized by an increase in the virtual height of the F-layer. A simple model of field aligned electron density depletion in the bottomside of the F-layer explains both the airglow observations and the ionospheric soundings. Initial auroras zone measurements show the structure and dynamics of the subvisual auroras in the noon sector that result from dayside precipitation. UHF satellite-to-aircraft propagation through the f-region auroras result in amplitude scintillations, both in the noon and midnight local time sectors. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raylegh's published data on the airglow green line covering an entire sunspot cycle have been little used because of the manner of presentation. These data have been reexamined and the results for the different stations put on a common basis and converted to present-day units. The assumptions and constants used by Rayleigh in his absolute calibration have been carefully checked, with a resulting small change in the absolute intensity that he had reported. Since Rayleigh worked with wide bandpass filters, a discussion of current knowledge of the night-sky continuum and its correlation with the green line has also been included. (Author).

Book excerpt: A large scale test program was developed jointly by AFGL and AFAL to evaluate the effects of equatorial ionospheric irregularities on UHF (250 MHz) satellite communications to map the temporal and spatial extent of the equatorial scintillation region, and to determine the geophysical mechanisms leading to the formation of irregularities in the equatorial ionosphere and thus to scintillations. Of specific interest were scintillation characteristics and effects observed by airborne terminals and their relation to simultaneously obtained results from ground based terminals. The test results are based on radio propagation and geophysical measurements conducted from ground and airborne stations and show the general scintillation patterns, latitudinal dependence, heading dependence and signal statistics. Backscatter measurements from the Jicamarca radar and optical observations from the all sky imaging photometer show the development and motion of the irregularity structure. Scintillation plots for several satellites received at the ground stations and on the aircraft are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates andbeginning graduate students* Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations andlaboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web* Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informativelaboratory experiments* Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn thematerial.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of global ionospheric research from the polar caps to equatorial regions It's more than a century since scientists first identified the ionosphere, the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation. Our understanding of this dynamic part of the near-Earth space environment has greatly advanced in recent years thanks to new observational technologies, improved numerical models, and powerful computing capabilities. Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of historic developments, recent advances, and future directions in ionospheric research. Volume highlights include: Behavior of the ionosphere in different regions from the poles to the equator Distinct characteristics of the high-, mid-, and low-latitude ionosphere Observational results from ground- and space-based instruments Ionospheric impacts on radio signals and satellite operations How earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth cause disturbances in the ionosphere The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.
