Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph challenges the accepted notion that Galatians is either a sample of classical rhetoric or should be interpreted in light of Graeco-Roman rhetorical handbooks. It demonstrates that the handbooks of Aristotle, Cicero, et al. discuss a form of oratory which was limited with respect to subject, venue and style of communication, and that Galatians falls outside such boundaries. The inapplicability of ancient canons of rhetoric is reinforced by a detailed comparison of Galatians with the handbooks, a survey of patristic attitudes towards Paul's communicative technique, and interaction with twentieth-century discussions of the nature of New Testament Greek. Dr Kern concludes that rhetorical handbooks were never a tool of literary criticism and that they cannot assist the search for a distinctly Pauline rhetoric. Thus this study has implications not only for Galatians, but also for other New Testament epistles.

Book excerpt: Uncircumcised messianic Galatians are no longer enslaved to those who by nature are not gods (Gal 4:8), but have become known by God and one with Israel, included as sons of Abraham without the need for circumcision, representing the eschatological movement of the nations turning to God, the beginning of a new creation triggered by the resurrection of God's crucified Son. Only if they keep their foreskins are they truly "nations." Only if they worship God alone, uncircumcised as they are, do they testify to the new creation that has started to transform the world. Their circumcision would not be a return to Jewish orthodoxy (for they have never been Jews) but, on the contrary, a concession to imperial idolatry, that compromises with a world ordered in the image of Caesar.

Book excerpt: There are two great revelators, or unfolders of Divine Truth in the Bible,—Moses in the Old Testament, and Paul in the New. Some one may say, “Is not Christ the Great Teacher?” In a sense this is true; but in a real sense Christ is the Person taught about, rather than teaching, in the Gospel. The law and the prophets pointed forward to Christ; the epistles point back to Him; and the book of Revelation points to His second coming, and those things connected with it. The Four Gospels tell the story of how He was revealed to men, and rejected by them. Christ Himself, therefore, is the theme of the Bible. Moses in the law reveals God’s holiness, and thus by means of the Law reveals human sin, and the utter hopelessness and helplessness of man. Paul in his great epistles reveal Christ as our Righteousness, Sanctification, Redemption, and All in All.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia was for many years a document of special interestand study for renowned New Testament scholar F. F. Bruce. This excellent volume in theNew International Greek Testament Commentary series contains Bruce's mature work onthat important early epistle. Through phrase-by-phrase exegesis of the Greek text, consistent awareness of the historicaland geographical context, and balanced dialogue with scores of other scholars, Brucesuccessfully bridges the hermeneutical gap and makes the text of Galatians come alive forboth scholars and students. Based on careful historical-critical-linguistic exegesis yet primarilytheological in character, this commentary places special emphasis throughout onPaul's insistence on justification before God by faith apart from works of the law, and onPaul's presentation of the Spirit as the principle of the new life in Christ.
