Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1950, The Epic of the Chaco is the fascinating memoir of the 34th President of Paraguay, Jose Felix Estigarribia, written between 1938-1939 in Washington, D.C., “whilst discharging his duties as envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary Paraguay.” The book’s editor, Pablo Max Ynsfrán, acted as counsellor of the Paraguayan legation during the same period and collaborated in drafting Estigarribia’s recollections as they are set down in the present volume. “The importance of this publication for the military historian of the Chaco War (1932-1935), in which Paraguay and Bolivia were involved, can hardly be overrated. Marshal Estigarribia held in that armed conflict—one of the most sanguinary ever fought by two South-American republics—the unique position of being the top planner (perhaps the only one) and the commander in chief of the Paraguayan army in the field during the entire course of the campaign. The remarkable success of his leadership is a well-known fact. He emerged from the Chaco War as one of the outstanding masters of strategy in South-American history.”—Editor’s Preface

Yet at times he presents us alternative views to the published accounts of historical events of the area, offering the "Navajo version" as gleaned from interviews with the old people themselves.

Book excerpt: Over twenty-five years ago, David Stuart began writing award-winning newspaper articles on regional archaeology that appealed to general readers. These columns shared interesting, and usually little-known, facts and stories about the ancient people and places of the Southwest. By 1985, Stuart had penned enough columns to fill a book, Glimpses of the Ancient Southwest, which has been unavailable for years. Now he has rewritten most of his original articles to include recently discovered information about Chaco Canyon, Bandelier, and Mesa Verde. Stuart's unusual perspective focuses on both the past and the present: "Want to know why gasoline now costs $4.00 a gallon, and is headed higher, yet we have no instant solution? Chacoan, Roman, even Egyptian archaeology all provide elemental answers." The Ancient Southwest shares those with us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish missions in the New World usually pacified sedentary peoples accustomed to the agricultural mode of mission life, prompting many scholars to generalize about mission history. James Saeger now reconsiders the effectiveness of the missions by examining how Guaycuruan peoples of South America's Gran Chaco adapted to them during the eighteenth century. Because the Guaycuruans were hunter-gatherers less suited to an agricultural lifestyle, their attitudes and behaviors can provide new insight about the impact of missions on native peoples. Responding to recent syntheses of the mission system, Saeger proposes that missions in the Gran Chaco did not fit the usual pattern. Through research in colonial documents, he reveals the Guaycuruan perspective on the missions, thereby presenting an alternative view of Guaycuruan history and the development of the mission system. He investigates Guaycuruan social, economic, political, and religious life before the missions and analyzes subsequent changes; he then traces Guaycuruan history into the modern era and offers an assessment of what Catholic missions meant to these peoples. Saeger's research into Spanish documents is unique for its elicitation of the Indian point of view. He not only reconstructs Guaycuruan life independent of Spanish contact but also shows how these Indians negotiated the conditions under which they would adapt to the mission way of life, thereby retaining much of their independence. By showing that the Guaycuruans were not as restricted in missions as has been assumed, Saeger demonstrates that there is a distinct difference between the establishment of missions and conquest. The Chaco Mission Frontier helps redefine mission studies by correcting overgeneralization about their role in Latin America.
