I., p. 236, Mr. T utt has a note on this question more especially with reference to the British Vanessa pairing in spring or autumn. In our New Zealand species (vanessa gonerilla) the pairing, I think, invariably takes place in Spring, as I have frequently observed them in September and October in copula on and about the native nettles, such being the foodplant of their larva. But I have not seen, or known, this species to pair in the autumn - W. W. Smith, Ashburton, N. Z. Imperfect development OF wings OF bombyx m0r1. - With regard to Mr. Mackonochie's article on Wing Development after Copulation, might I call his special attention to the fact that in the case quoted, the Specimen of Platypteryxfalcula was a female. Had it been a male, I very much doubt whether the development would have taken place, the latter being much more reduced than the former, never indeed long surviving the fulfilment of the purpose for which it was created. Several years ago I reared a number of larva of Bombyx mom, and many of the pupa hatching Simultaneously, several of the insects paired before developing their wings, after which, as far as I can remember, only a few females ever developed them at all fully - D. H. S. Steuart, 66, Albert Hall Mansions, W. February 27t/z, 1891. [i do not think sex in any way inﬂuences the development, which proceeds during copulation in both sexes. - ed.] retarded development OF wings.-i never saw an insect develop wings at the same rate of speed which Mrs. Bazett noticed in her Cbesias spartiata but no doubt every one will have remarked the quickness with which the wings on one side often develop, compared with the other side. Insects often wander about for a long time before the wings commence to expand; for instance, last year, I had an Acronycta (viminia) myricce which emerged two days before the wings commenced to develop, and after so long they developed perfectly. Everyone and each one of the editorial staff have been most loyal for the welfare of the paper, while many other gentlemen have given their aid ungrudgingly. The list of contributors has increased, the number of plates is quite normal, and from communications we note that the matter has been most acceptable to our readers for its varied and interesting character. The great feature of the volume has been the special Tutt number in May, probably a unique issue in the annals of entomological literature. For its success we are particularly indebted to those gentle men outside our staff, who contributed of their best, the kindly notices of him we have lost. In the controversy of the year, when an aggressive attempt was made to prevent for ever the necessary extension of the British Museum (natural History) our efforts were on the side we knew our late Editor would have forcefully taken. To the success of the opposition to this nefarious project, the splendid work of the Rev. G. Wheeler. Both in the magazine and in other ways, in no small degree contributed. We desire, however, to proceed with these during the coming year. At our request, Mr. Selwyn Image has generously written us one of his delightful poems to conclude our present volume; for his kindness we offer our grateful thanks. We are again indebted to Mr. H. Donisthorpe and Professor T. Hudson Beare for taking entire charge of the Coleoptera section, and have been fortunate in obtaining the aid of Mr. Chitty to help us with other less-worked orders.
