This paper explores the impact of teaching the Enneagram, a personality tool to cultivate self-awareness, and varied Christian spiritual practices upon the spiritual lives of these students. The dissertation engages this topic by providing and overview of the Enneagram, including a brief history of the typing system as well as an explanation of each of the nine personality types. Next, the paper offers a definition of Christian spiritual practices drawing from the work of scholars and spiritual writers. The Enneagram and spiritual practices are then viewed through an historical and cultural lens in the context of Wake Forest University School of Divinity. The paper next offers a description of the project portion of this dissertation, a course taught at Wake Forest entitled “The Spirituality of the Enneagram,” which includes reflections on the design, teaching, and evaluation of the course. Data gathered at the end of the course demonstrates a significant positive impact of teaching the Enneagram and various spiritual practices upon the spiritual lives of divinity students. A new tool to nurture spiritual growth by integrating Enneagram personality types with particular spiritual practices – called the Enneagram of Spiritual Practices – is offered at the end of the paper in response to the learnings from the course..
